Sir Alex Ferguson feels Manchester United are the top team in English football despite the financial muscle of rivals Manchester City.
The Red Devils chief has spoken out ahead of Sunday's eagerly-awaited derby clash at Old Trafford with his side sitting two points beneath City, who are proudly top of the Premier League.
Ferguson is aware that City boss Roberto Mancini has had vast amounts of money to spend from the club's Abu Dhabi owners which has seen him bring in a wealth of star players such as Sergio Aguero.
However, the veteran Scot insists that his reigning champions remain the top dogs in England regardless of how much money City have at their disposal.
"We are ahead of the game," Ferguson told the Daily Mail. "We have a wonderful training ground. We have a good youth set-up, we don't need to touch that.
"We do well in terms of scouting abroad, getting young players in like Javier Hernandez.
"Money can always make things better, of course, but I don't look at money as an important issue for us at the moment.
"If I need a player, the Glazers have been great, they have always provided the money and they will continue to do so.
"But the difference between us and City is that we have built over a long period, there is a structure. City have had to do it in a quick spell.
"When the Abu Dhabi people took over, they were looking for instant results which they are getting."
