Difference between Cloud Based Phone System and Business ...

Business telephone system

Business telephone system generally has multiple extensions to facilitate all key employees of an organization to intercommunicate amongst themselves and make outbound calls to suppliers, field personnel, customers and other stakeholders. The simple fact is a business telephone system is indispensible for any enterprise regardless of its size and scale of operations.

Present day business phone systems have several standard as well as advanced optional features such as Auto Attendant, Speed Dialing, Conferencing, Call Forwarding, Find-me-follow-me, Do not Disturb, Call Transfer, Toll-Free Numbers, Caller ID Blocking, Multi-Ring facility, Distinctive Ringing, Enhanced Voicemail, Area Code Selection, Anonymous Call Block etc.

A business phone system can range from a key pad system meant for small businesses to an intermediate hybrid system to a PBX (private branch exchange) for large corporations.

Business telephone systems can function using the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and/or over the Internet (called Internet telephony or VoIP). Business phone systems can also be availed as a hosted PBX system - where the entire hardware will be located at the service provider's place. The major advantage of a Hosted PBX is the user need not invest in the equipment nor bother about managing and maintaining the system.

Perhaps you can also consider adding unified messaging and online fax facility. The onus is on you to select the right business phone system that will help your employees to make become more efficient and improve their productivity.

Cloud Based Phone System

Cloud based phone system is the latest innovation and it simply means phone service that is delivered through the internet.

In today's highly competitive scenario, business enterprises to stay and thrive should completely focus on business developmental activities and not waste time in less productive work like managing and maintaining the communication system.

Cloud PBX recognizes this fact as it is Internet-based voice and data communications and all telecommunications applications, switching and storage are hosted by a third-party service provider at his premises. Cloud PBX has all the features of a traditional telephone system and a lot more. One more valid reason why companies may opt for a Cloud based phone system will be the cost factor.

The Cloud based phone system has the potential to deliver calls over the internet, route incoming calls to the right extension within a company, and provide all standard as well as advanced telephone features including voicemail and call recording.

A major benefit of Cloud-PBX is scalability. You can initially buy the basic system and add extensions and optional advanced features as your business grows. As Cloud PBX uses the internet, you can have a telephone connected to the Cloud PBX sans geographic boundaries. A Cloud PBX phone system also allows users to get connected to VoIP handsets.

The concept of Cloud PBX has truly caught on amongst the business community and there is a sourt in the number of Cloud PBX service providers.

The concept of Cloud PBX has truly caught on amongst the business community and there is a spurt in the number of Cloud PBX service providers. In view of this, you can expect competitive pricing and efficient 24X7 service.

Flood-risk homes could be stripped of insurance | The Times

Hundreds of thousands of householders in areas at high risk of flooding face losing their home-insurance policies next year unless the Government finds extra cash to rescue the industry.

Talks between insurance chiefs and ministers, which have lasted for months, are on ?the brink of collapse?, The Times has learnt. The impasse came as hundreds of homes in the Midlands and the South West were deluged by floods.

The Environment Agency issued 221 flood warnings and 267 flood alerts yesterday, with river levels still rising in some parts of the West Country. More than 800 properties had been flooded since

Nintendo Wii U

Nintendo is stepping into the next generation of game systems, which is a cross between the current gen and a concept we've never seen before. The Nintendo Wii U is the company's first high-definition game system, and its graphical power rivals the Xbox 360? and the PlayStation 3?. But its best feature isn't the ability to compare favorably to 7- and 6-year-old game consoles. Its big selling point is a huge, tablet-like controller that combines the motion controls of the Wii, the physical controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the touch screen of the Nintendo 3DS?. This gamepad signals not only a step in Nintendo's console evolution, but a curious and bold twist on gaming conventions. The Wii U is bursting with potential, but since some key features aren't yet enabled, it will take some time before we'll know if that potential will be fulfilled.?

Editors' Note: While the Wii U is available for purchase, at the time of this writing, the console is missing features including TVii and support for multiple gamepads. Nintendo plans to launch the TVii feature in December, and individual gamepads will not be available for sale until 2013. We will reevaluate the Wii U when these features are added.

First, the basics: The Wii U is available in two versions. The glossy white Basic set is a $299.99 (list) system that gives you everything you need to start playing the Wii U, but nothing else. It includes the game console with 8GB of memory, the Wii U gamepad, power cables for each, a sensor bar, and an HDMI cable. The glossy black Deluxe set ($349.99 list) throws in a handful of useful accessories and a pack-in game. It includes everything in the Basic set (with 32GB of memory instead of 8GB), plus a charging cradle and a stand for the gamepad, a stand for the console to let you set it up vertically like the current Wii system, and a copy of Nintendo Land. At just $50 more, you get a lot of extras with the Deluxe set, making it the better deal (and, at the time of this writing, the rarer version to find at retail).

Console and Gamepad Design
While the Wii U looks as slender and compact as the original Wii, it's much heftier (but still more than a pound lighter than the recently slimmed-down Sony PlayStation 3). It weighs 3.4 pounds and measures 10.5 inches long while keeping a relatively slim 1.9-by-6.6-inch profile (HW). The front of the system houses a slot-loading optical drive, Power and Eject buttons, a syncing button for the game controller, and a plastic door that flips open to reveal an SD card slot and a USB port. Beside the built-in storage, which varies depending on the version of the console you buy, you can expand storage with an SD card or USB drive. You need an SD card for Nintendo's Byzantine system transfer process to bring your WiiWare and Virtual Console games to the Wii U from your old console. The back of the system houses an HDMI port, a power port, a sensor bar port, two USB ports, and an A/V port that uses the same component or composite video cables the Wii uses. The Wii U only comes with an HDMI cable, so if you want to use the analog inputs you'll have to buy a cable (or use one from your old Wii).

The big draw of the Wii U, like the Wii before it, is the controller. Instead of a motion-sensing Wiimote (which the Wii U can still use), the Wii U uses an ambitious gamepad that's more like a tablet than a traditional game controller. It features a 6.2-inch, 854-by-480-pixel resistive?touch screen that serves as the primary method of information input and menu navigation. The touch screen is sensitive enough for one-point activities, but it can't handle multi-touch gestures like smartphones and tablets. The low-res display is fine for most activities, but pales in comparison to some other touch-screen devices, like the PlayStation Vita's? brilliant 5-inch, 920-by-544 OLED screen or the Nexus 7? tablet's tightly-packed 7-inch 1280-by-800 IPS screen.

The gamepad also acts as its own display, either mirroring the Wii U's picture from your? HDTV, or offering additional information and menu options. You can also stream games directly to the gamepad and bypass the console entirely. Like its gamepad name implies, the controller also has a full selection of physical controls surrounding the screen, including dual analog sticks, six face buttons (A, B, X, Y, Start, and Select), a direction pad, four shoulder buttons, and Home, Power, and TV Remote buttons. You also get motion controls, just like with the Wiimote, so it can detect how it's positioned and at what angle. Despite its large size of 5.3 by 10.2 by 0.9 inches (HWD), the gamepad feels surprisingly light at 1.1 pounds, and is comfortable to hold.

A microphone on the bottom side of the gamepad can pick up your voice, two speakers let the controller provide its own music, and a front-facing camera lets you video chat with other Wii U users, and take photos for various reasons (like making a Mii avatar based on your face for use in games; it's not intended as a stand-alone camera for snapshots). A headphone jack sits on the top edge of the controller, along with a volume slider, a power port, and a removable stylus. The Wii U gamepad charges through a cable that plugs into the wall with the bundled adapter, but Deluxe owners can charge the gamepad with an included cradle, which easily connects through two contacts in the bottom of the controller. If you bought a Basic set, you can pick up the $20 cradle separately.

The gamepad will communicate with the Wii U at distances up to 30 feet. However, walls, corners, and physial obstructions can interfere with the wireless signal, which is based on a proprietary system Nintendo created to minimize latency. I used the gamepad all around my relatively small studio apartment, but I couldn't walk more than halfway down the length of the large PCMag Labs before the gamepad lost its connection to the Wii U.

On a single charge, the gamepad lasted between 3 to 5 hours in my tests. But if you run out of juice, you can use it as a wired controller with the power cable plugged in. Also, the gamepad battery is removable, so expect extended batteries from third-party companies in the coming months. Still, a 3-5 hour battery life for a home console controller is disappointing, and if you plan on marathon gaming sessions expect to keep the gamepad tethered.

LONDON -- (Marketwire) -- 11/19/12 -- Education software company, Eazyspeak, announced today the global release of its Doki series of language-learning apps for the iPhone and iPad devices. The five different Doki apps include: English, French, German, Iberian Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Doki Further, the advanced-beginner level language apps are available on the iPad only, and offer additional language instruction -- English, French, German, and Iberian Spanish.

The guiding concept behind Doki is to learn basic foreign language dialogue and vocabulary used in everyday life through an animated environment without the use of grammar -- i.e. conversation-based language learning. To ensure Doki is pedagogically sound, a team of educational experts in the UK was formed to evaluate the app. Some of Doki's notable features include:

  • Comprehensive language lessons: Doki offers 51 lessons divided into 14 chapters designed to teach users a language beginning with basic words and phrases.
  • Animated, real-world locations: Learning a language is easier if you're learning words and phrases in the context of how you will use them. For example, in the Hotel chapter the user learns how to make a hotel reservation and in the Travel Agency chapter the user learns how to make travel arrangements. Doki offers the user fun, witty, animated scenarios in these diverse locations.
  • Extensive language support for global audiences: Doki's on-screen instructions and in-app 'Help' files are available in 17 different languages.
  • Doki Further: Doki Further offers advanced-beginner level language instruction for users who have worked through all 51 lessons of the initial Doki language app, or have a basic proficiency in the given language.
  • Try before you buy: Doki offers two free introductory chapters for every language. Users can try Doki's app before buying additional chapters.

"For many, learning a new language involves unhappy memories of stern high-school teachers, painfully awkward role-playing scenarios, and endless piles of language workbooks," confided Jane Kayantas, Director of Doki. "The idea of learning a new language can be a little intimidating for so many people and for so many different reasons. The good news is that, thanks to technological advancements and the ubiquity of mobile devices, anyone can now master the basics of a language, with nothing more than a smartphone and a little commitment. Doki is a unique app, allowing someone, for the first time, to experience language-learning as a fun interactive activity!"

"The fact remains, that today we are truly a global society, due to social media, television/film and of course, cheap travel. With that trend, both adults and children around the world, are eager to learn new languages," added Kayantas. "Doki is the only method that dispenses with grammar and even writing, and allows someone to interact with animated characters as many times as he likes, in the comfort of his sitting room. The iPad and iPhone are amazing new tools of learning, and we made sure that their unique interactive features have been fully utilized to enhance the learning experience."

All 14 of the Doki apps are currently available for download from the iTunes App Store, including Learn Basic English with Doki for iPhone, Learn Basic French with Doki for iPhone, Learn Basic Latin American Spanish with Doki for iPad, and Learn German with Doki Further for iPad.

"challenging Casanova" | MetaFilter

Guys don't want casual sex: "This stereotype 'tells us that guys are primarily interested in sex, not relationships... This contributes to the notion that guys are emotional clods who are incapable of connecting with their partners because, hey, they?re just guys, and guys are only interested in sex.'... the Wake Forest University professor lays out the current data on young men?s sexual desires and behavior to make a case against this insidious stereotype." Salon interviews Andrew Smiler, author of Challenging Casanova: Beyond the Stereotype of the Promiscuous Young Male.
More from the interview:
...When we interview adolescents or undergrads, the girls really have the impression that guys are just interested in sex, that they?re not interested in relationships. What we know is that most guys do get into relationships, they enjoy relationships, they do a lot of things in relationships that are not about sex and they?re not doing them just to put up with them in order to get sex. Guys get something out of relationships; they like relationships. If you add in the fact that average age of first marriage is something like 28 for guys, a lot of guys have the sense that this girl they?re starting to date at 17 or 19 or 21 probably isn?t going to be the one ? and yet they are choosing to date. They could easily choose to just hook up ? or instead of spending that money in a bar you could get a prostitute ? but they?re consistently choosing to be in relationships.

...One of the ways it impacts girls and women is they get the wrong proportions. They?re told that most guys, if not all guys, just want sex, that they don?t want relationships. So we have a lot of stories and evidence that girls are putting their bodies out there and doing things sexually in order to entice guys into relationships. We?re giving girls the wrong percentages which makes them perhaps behave in ways in which they wouldn?t behave otherwise ? starting your contact with somebody sexually instead of relationally, for example. [Some have argued] that because we give girls this image of boys, girls are taught to not attend to their own desires and own sexual wants. So girls? whole sexuality is really about both enticing desires from boys and also controlling that desire. That introduces some real issues around duplicity and intention. We?re not doing girls any favors here either.

NYT: Inside the Mind of the Boy Dating Your Daughter
The stereotype of the 16-year-old boy is that he has sex on the brain. But a fascinating new report suggests that boys are motivated more by love and a desire to form real relationships with the girls they date.
NYT: follow-up to "Inside the Mind of the Boy Dating Your Daughter"
Researchers said the findings show that teenage boys really are motivated by love and a desire for meaningful relationships. But many people still don?t buy it, including, it seems, many former teenage boys... Such skepticism about boys in their teens isn?t surprising, say researchers, but it reveals more about what?s going on in the minds of adults, than of teenagers.

...None of this is to say that teen boys aren?t interested in sex. Of course they are. But adolescence can often be a lonely time, and for many boys, girls represent needed companionship, Dr. Thompson said. ?Many boys are yearning to talk to somebody, but they can?t talk to their boy friends because it?s all teasing and a lot of competitiveness,? he said. ?For many boys who have been a little bit lonely in the boy group, finally meeting a girl and talking to her is a huge relief.?

But the widespread skepticism about teenage boys is worrisome, some psychologists say, because it may mean that boys ultimately will fulfill our low expectations of them.

*Smiler on HuffPo: Why So Bleak?
What we're missing is an understanding of why relationships are a mess. The answer is both simple and complex: we give young people very little guidance in developing healthy relationships. In common culture -- the world of the media and popular Internet content -- we get a very singular depiction of a good couple, or at least good courting, in a million variations. He makes the moves, she guides the relationship and they eventually get married and live happily ever after. Yes, there are misunderstandings and the couple almost -- or does -- break up before they come to their senses. That realization is accompanied by an (often grand) apology, acknowledgement of misunderstanding or fear and the couple lives happily ever after.

In most segments of common culture, the work it takes for couples to stay together is invisible. We don't really see the efforts to identify one's own wants and the difficulty in balancing one's own needs with a partner's needs. We rarely see crises whose resolution requires more than an episode or two, and certainly not the same problem occurring over and over. We never see the resentment that builds up when one person always puts their partner first and rarely, if ever, gets their own needs met.

The places where that content appears with some regularity are aimed squarely at girls and women... So what's the message? Girls talk about relationships, almost exclusively with other girls or women. Boys get to figure it out for themselves. As a result, boys and girls have very different levels of knowledge about relationship dynamics. It's no surprise some people think they're from different planets!

Latest Google Play APK suggests preorders in the works, app reviews may require a Google account

If you're down for a round of crystal ball gazing into the future of Google Play, then you'd best thank Android Police, which recently tore apart the latest APK in attempt to learn what new features might be on deck. Most curiously, the mobile app suggests that pre-order functionality may work its way into Google Play, and while there's nothing definitive about how it might be implemented, it goes without saying that the feature would make more sense for hardware rather than software. Not to stop there, it also appears that developers are working to integrate the app review system with Google+. As is, it seems that you may be required to be a Google+ member in order to review apps, and your name and picture will be publicly tied to these reviews. To learn more about these features and other potential new additions, be sure to hit up the source link below.

In Leaked Docs, Honeywell Cites Obama Ties As Key to Anti-Union ...

This article is cross-posted from In These Times

In These Times has exclusively obtained a leaked internal Honeywell document outlining an anti-union strategy that includes leveraging Obama administration connections.?The documents suggest that the megacorporation is deeply concerned about recent union activity at its factories and the bad press that has resulted (one example cited is a Working? In These Times?op-ed).

The PowerPoint presentation, downloadable?here, was leaked to?In These Times by unionized Honeywell workers who downloaded them from company?s internal database.?Titled ?DRAFT Honeywell Readiness Plan for Corporate Union Campaigns? and marked ?Honeywell ? Confidential,? the slideshow was authored by four Honeywell interns (see correction at bottom). Though the document is undated, it appears to be relatively recent, relying on 2011 data. Its stated objective is ?to develop a framework that can be used by Honeywell with the resources required to prevent or react to a nationwide corporate union campaign and dissipate any problems as quickly as possible.?

?Honeywell is at significant risk of becoming the target of a national union corporate campaign and has no readiness plan in place to deal with this possibility,? warns the document. A graphic identifies a number of unions and workers? organizations as potential sources of such a campaign, including SEIU, Warehouse Workers United, the AFL-CIO?s Change to Win, UNITE HERE! and the United Steelworkers. Honeywell notes in particular the dangers of negative publicity, citing as one example?an?August 4, 2011 Working In These Times op-ed by Metropolis Honeywell employee and?USW Local 7-699 leader?John Paul Smith titled??What the Honeywell Lockout Taught Me About International Labor Solidarity.?

?

Tip: Hit pause to read individual slides?

The PowerPoint then presents a five-part prevention plan broken down into ?1.) Labor Employee Relations 2.) Communications 3.) Government Relations 4.) Legal and 5.) Global Security.?

The third section, on Government Relations (GR), reveals Honeywell?s hopes that its influence with the Obama administration can be leveraged to help combat union activity. Slide 18 of the confidential document states that Honeywell (HON) should ?continue to grow positive relationships with elected officials, with federal agencies, focusing on local branches.? These relationships, the document explains, ?can be directed at union activity, if needed.? The plan suggests that Honeywell?s Government Relations division can be used to ?break up union cohesion across the country.? A picture of President Obama speaking at a Honeywell plant is included (see above), with a caption reading ?HON has great relationships with Federal officials, focus is needed at the State and local levels.?

Indeed, President Obama and Honeywell CEO Dave E. Cote have a?very close relationship. Cote visited with Obama at the White House this past Wednesday to push him to cut budget spending. Cote is considered one of Obama?s closest allies in the business community. In January of 2009, Cote introduced Obama?s stimulus package in a White House speech. Cote was subsequently appointed by Obama to serve on the Deficit Commission. President Obama?even flew with Cote to India while a lockout at Honeywell?s Metropolis, Ill. uranium plant was ongoing. Cote returned the favor by giving heavily to the Democratic Party. In the 2010 election cycle when the Met, Honeywell was?the top corporate PAC contributor to the Democratic Party.

Union activists believe that Honeywell?s federal ties have already enabled the company to call in government help when suppressing unions. In 2009,?Honeywell threatened to use Marines to replace 500 United Steelworkers members in Blount Island, Fla. if the military contractors?went out on strike. Honeywell had the military security clearances pulled on several of the union leaders, leading them to lose their jobs. In 2010, I exposed evidence that Honeywell cheated on qualification tests for scab replacement workers during the lockout at its Metropolis uranium facility; during the lag between my report and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission taking action, the scab replacement workers caused a number of accidents. In 2011, International Association of Machinists Lodge 778, employed as nuclear weapons workers at Honeywell?s Kansas City,?accused the Department of Energy of abandoning its legal mandate by not stepping into to stop a concessionary contract Honeywell was pushing on the union.?(Note: I have written over two dozen articles on this issue since 2009; for more details on the federal government enabling Honeywell anti-union strategy, see my November 2011 piece, ?Is the Federal Government Helping to Bust Unions??)

The recent leaked documents raises serious questions about whether Honeywell benefited from its relationships with the Obama administration as part of its anti-union maneuvers. The White House did not respond to request for comment.

It?s not uncommon for corporations to invest this level of planning into combating organized labor.?As I?reported for?Working? In These Times, corporate executives?from a number of companies?attended a conference in Arizona in May on how to lock out workers and bust unions?headlined, oddly, by Henry Winkler, a.k.a. the Fonz.

Another section of the confidential documents lays out a comprehensive plan to bust union organizing.?First, the document suggests a company-wide ?Corporate Campaign Risk Assessment System? that ?would be a tool used to identify those sites that are at a greater risk of becoming involved in a corporate campaign and to then prioritize the sites for preventive and counter measuring planning. ? The Corporate Campaign Risk Assessment Survey would give the LER (Labor Relations) team scores on the high risk areas to determine whether or not these sites could be the local campaigns that acts as a ?toe hold? for unions to launch a corporate campaign against Honeywell.?

Then, as soon as there are union rumblings at a non-union Honeywell plant, managers are instructed to inform Honeywell?s HR Department, which then informs Honeywell?s Labor Relations Department (LER), which ?puts plan in place on the ground and immediately visits the site.??The LER is told to dispatch one or two representatives from the Burke Group, a notorious anti-union firm that?was used by Honeywell during the 14-month long Metropolis lockout.?Next, an official boardroom is ?set up on site to implement daily operations,? including ?employees paid to sit and listen to anti-union campaigns.??Honeywell supervisors are advised to obtain the proper legal assistance in struggle with unions, to secure Honeywell property and to train local security personnel in ?warning signs of union activity.?

?These documents reinforce what we have believed all along that this is a company that isn?t interested in getting along with their labor groups. This also proves that they see us as a threat,? says USW Local 7-669 President Stephen Lech, whose photo is included in the document?s description of the Metropolis lockout. ?As far as us being mentioned so much in these documents, I am kind of honored that our union had that kind of impact. I am flattered that the company is going to fashion a whole plan based on the labor struggle at Metropolis. They learned a lot during that process and we learned a lot to, but we can change our labor strategy a whole lot quicker than theirs.?

UPDATE: In an statement emailed to In These Times after a mutually agreed deadline, Honeywell spokesperson Victoria Ann Streitfeld wrote:

This document was prepared by summer interns, not full-time Honeywell employees, and as such should not be considered to reflect Honeywell?s positions or policies.

Honeywell?s preference is to work directly with its global work force, but also respects the rights that employees have to form unions or acquire union representation when they choose to do so.

Honeywell works closely with a wide range of constituents that are important to making our businesses successful, including employees, and where appropriate the unions that represent them, our communities, and their elected officials.

It?s unclear from the document (which In These Times?has made available for download?here),?whether the interns were proposing new policy or summarizing existing policy. What?s clear is that they had access to an enormous amount of internal information. The 61-page PowerPoint presentation, marked ?Honeywell ? Confidential,? contains indications that Honeywell had been tracking union activity at a dozen plants across the United States, complex metrics for analyzing the threat posed by unions, and a note about Honeywell?s deployment of the Burke Group, an anti-union consulting organization.

In response to the Honeywell statement, USW 7-669 President Stephen Lech said:

It surprises me that they are denying that this is their company policy, because this is exactly what we saw in Metropolis. [The authors] are mentioning things in this PowerPoint that show they know exactly what Honeywell is doing. They knew about Metropolis, the Burke Group, they had pictures of our pickets lines, detailed information about company structure and union activity. This doesn?t sound like the kind of information mere interns would have. And what they say about working with government officials is exactly what they did during the Honeywell lockout.

NBA: Lakers put on a show for their new coach

LOS ANGELES - Are we having fun yet?

You had to imagine Mike D'Antoni was happy Friday night.

The Lakers wasted no time embracing D'Antoni's freewheeling offense, even as their new coach remained behind in their locker room to undergo physical therapy after undergoing knee replacement surgery recently.

The newly unburdened Lakers ran down the court with uncharacteristic speed and determination, scored with ease and pulled away from the Phoenix Suns for a 114-102 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center.

The Lakers set a season-high for points in a game.

Say goodbye to "Slowtime."

Say hello to "Showtime."

Friday marked the end of an era, with interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff guiding the Lakers through D'Antoni's up-tempo offensive game plan while putting a halt to the slow-motion offense employed by former coach Mike Brown.

To be accurate, the Lakers didn't charge down the court with reckless abandon. They picked their spots, running when they outnumbered the retreating Suns and slowing down when the situation called for caution.

What was different was the way the Lakers played with the ball in their hands. They moved it around the court quicker, passing it to open teammates closer to the basket. Or farther away, if the situation was right.

The Lakers found a nice rhythm to their offense from the opening minutes and led by 35-30 after the first quarter and 62-57

by halftime. D'Antoni said in his introductory news conference Thursday he would be surprised if the Lakers didn't average 110 points.

They went into the game averaging 96.5 points in their old deliberate offense.

Freed from Brown's micro-managed version of the Princeton offense, the Lakers played with an ease that made it seem as if they were youngsters playing in a gym without fans and without supervision or pressure.

Metta World Peace scored a team-leading 15 points by halftime, for instance.

Pau Gasol made his first five shots, for another example.

Kobe Bryant picked his spots, content to be part of the greater picture.

Dwight Howard found plenty of openings, too.

Even the Lakers' maligned second unit was effective at times.

Bryant scored a team-leading 31 points on 10-for-24 shooting for the Lakers (4-5). World Peace had 22 points. Howard scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Gasol had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Hill scored 10 points in a reserve role.

Goran Dragic scored 22 points for the Suns (4-6), and Luis Scola added 18 points.

Imagine what it might be like when Steve Nash returns from a leg injury. Also think what it might be like when D'Antoni makes his debut on the Lakers bench, expected to be Sunday against the Houston Rockets at Staples Center.

Naturally, the Suns played right into the Lakers' hands Friday, keeping the game moving at a brisk clip from the opening jump. The defensive-minded Rockets won't be as willing to play at the same tempo Sunday. That's not their method of operation.

Bickerstaff sounded eager to hand the baton to D'Antoni, joking before the contest that if this wasn't his final game as Brown's replacement he "would heal D'Antoni's knee myself." Bickerstaff improved his record to 3-1.

The Lakers weren't flawless in their execution against the Suns, who went on several extended runs themselves. The Lakers led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter only to see the Suns charge past with a 15-0 run for a 55-50 lead.

The Lakers then closed the half with a 12-0 run for a 62-55 edge.

They took a 92-84 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bryant had a team-leading 25 points on 9-for-20 shooting going into the final period, and World Peace had 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is darting off to Southeast Asia to showcase a foreign policy achievement and reinforce the U.S. role as a counterweight to China.

Obama leaves Saturday for a four-day trip to Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia, his first trip abroad since June and his fourth to Asia, where he has been eager to expand the U.S. footprint. It's a brief break from dicey fiscal negotiations and a national security sex scandal that are competing with the glow of his re-election.

Freed from the constraints of campaigning, Obama is quickly re-establishing his foreign policy credentials by being the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar, also known as Burma, which was internationally shunned for decades and is now hailed for its steps toward democratization.

Obama is also attending the East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, eager to secure the U.S.'s place as a major player in a region that long has operated under China's influence. The trip underscores Obama's goal of establishing the United States as an Asian-Pacific power, a worldview defined by 21st-century geopolitics but also by Obama's personal identity as America's first Pacific president. Obama was born in Hawaii.

The White House sees the trip in historic terms, in no small part because of the breakthrough with Myanmar, but also because of its broader strategic significance.

"Continuing to fill in our pivot to Asia will be a critical part of this president's second term and ultimately his foreign policy legacy," said deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes.

In choosing this time to travel ? the East Asia Summit was scheduled some time ago ? Obama is taking advantage of his electoral success, and his international counterparts are bound to be in a congratulatory mood.

But Obama also heads out at a sensitive time for the U.S. economy. Only six weeks remain before automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts kick in that could set back the economy if Obama and congressional Republicans don't find agreement on a deficit reduction plan.

Stephen Hadley, national security adviser to President George W. Bush, cautioned that failure by Washington to resolve the so-called fiscal cliff could signal to emerging economies that the democratic system is flawed.

"That's why countries are flirting with this notion that maybe China has it right: State capitalism plus keeping your people in line," he recently told the World Affairs Councils of America. "That is very destructive."

But China also has problems with corruption and a sluggish economy.

"Burma is sending a powerful signal that people are rejecting the notion that an authoritarian model is the key to development," Rhodes said.

Still, the precarious nature of the budget negotiations is not lost on Asian countries and Obama will likely find himself on the sidelines offering reassurances to other leaders that the U.S. will not plunge over a fiscal cliff.

"Some, particularly allies, will worry about the impact on defense spending at a time when Chinese power is rising," said Michael Green, a former Asia adviser to Bush who now is a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a foreign policy think tank.

Telegraphing Obama's response to that concern, White House national security adviser Tom Donilon conceded that "after a decade of war ... there will be reductions in the U.S. defense budget."

But, he added: "Guided by our new defense strategy, our defense spending program will continue to support our key priorities, including our presence and missions in Asia."

No doubt, Obama also will be dogged by personnel matters back home. His CIA director, David Petraeus, abruptly resigned after acknowledging an extramarital affair. The identity of the next spy chief is no minor matter to the Chinese, but also to Asian allies.

During the brief stop Monday in Myanmar, Obama will meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein, and deliver an address in which he will call for continued political reforms in the country.

Myanmar's democratization has led to rare bipartisanship in the U.S. capital. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who has had a longstanding interest in the Asian country, commended Obama for scheduling the trip.

"I think it's an important step for him to take," McConnell said.

In Cambodia, also a first visit for a sitting U.S. president, Obama will participate in the East Asia Summit, which includes the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations and eight other nations: the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.

Obama will hold separate one-on-one meetings with outgoing Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

Those meetings come amid territorial disputes in the region, including rival claims by China, the Philippines and Vietnam to South China Sea islands and disputed East China Sea islands controlled by Japan.

The trip is not without controversy.

Human rights groups have argued that Obama's trip to Myanmar is premature and that, in seeking to find allies in the region, Obama has been less attentive to repressive regimes such as that of Cambodia's longtime Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Obama aides acknowledge that Myanmar can still do better and say Obama will raise U.S. concerns about Cambodia's crackdowns on dissidents and civil society groups in the meeting with Hun Sen.

Discovery could lead to billions of dollars in energy savings

(Phoenix, AZ Nov. 15, 2012) -- Vision researchers at Barrow Neurological Institute have made a groundbreaking discovery into the optimization of light sources to human vision. By tuning lighting devices to work more efficiently with the human brain the researchers believe billions of dollars in energy costs could be saved.

The research was conducted by Stephen Macknik, PhD, of Barrow's Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology, and Susana Martinez-Conde, PhD, of Barrow's Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience. The study is published Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper, titled "Optimizing the temporal dynamics of light to human perception," is believed to be the first attempt to tune light-emitting devices to the optimal temporal dynamics of the human visual system.

The discovery concerns the way humans perceive temporal modulations of light. For example, most light-emitting devices, such as light bulbs, video monitors and televisions, flicker. Faster flicker rates result in reduced perception of flicker, which is more comfortable to viewers. In studying this phenomenon in the brain, the researchers discovered that there is a range of flicker dynamics of light that optimizes the perceived brightness of the light without increasing power.

"We found a temporal sweet spot in visual perception that can be exploited to obtain significant savings by redesigning light emitting devices to flicker with optimal dynamics to activate visual system neurons in the human brain," says Dr. Macknik.

The researchers estimate that if every light-emitting device in the U.S. from light bulbs to cell phones operated at optimal efficiency for the human visual system, it could result in billions of dollars of savings in electricity and power.

To come to their conclusion, the researchers conducted experiments into two contradictory theories of temporal visual perception, or how bright a light appears. Bloch's Law states that the perceived contrast of a visual stimulus increases with its duration, but eventually plateaus at approximately 100 milliseconds. For example, a 5-millisecond flash will appear half as bright as a 10-millisecond flash, but a 200-millisecond flash will be just as bright as one of 400 milliseconds. The Broca-Sulzer Effect, on the other hand, states that perceived contrast increases with duration initially, but then peaks and falls again.

The researchers discovered that the discrepancy between Bloch's Law and the Broca-Sulzer Effect is caused by an intrinsic bias among experiment subjects, leading to dramatically skewed data. By improving their experimental design to overcome this bias, something that has never been before reported or intentionally controlled for, the results demonstrated that temporal vision actually follows the Broca-Sulzer Effect.

"Researchers have been studying temporal vision for more than 125 years, but because ours is the first experiment of its kind to control for all known forms of criteria, it is the first to accurately measure the role of temporal dynamics in brightness perception," says Dr. Macknik. "Thus, the power savings are ripe for the picking because we can adjust our lighting to flicker to take advantage of this peak in perception."
