Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Camera [now with more colors!]

?Update: The doors to Samsung's impressive booth opened this morning, and laying within were a couple of Galaxy Cameras that we didn't see during Unpacked. On the stand is a rather vivid pair of new colors in red and in orange. So we thought we'd share some pictures with you. There's also the already announced dark blue version thrown in for good measure.

We're live in Berlin at the Samsung Unpacked event where the Samsung Galaxy Camera has just been unveiled. We've had a little hands-on time with the new Galaxy Camera, and the first thing that strikes is that this is a capable, high-quality point-and-shoot. The device feels extremely solid and well built, and the 4.8-inch HD SuperLCD display is of similar quality to the S3's.

We shouldn't forget that this is a camera powered by Android, and not an out and out Android device. Samsung has put their latest version of the Touchwiz Nature UX on there, based on Android 4.1. Yes, that's right, this is a camera running Jelly Bean. The possibilities with a connected camera are pretty exciting, and we're seeing the start of a whole new category of devices. 

Of course, image quality remains to be seen. However, with a 16-megapixel sensor and 20X optical zoom, Samsung looks to have created a compelling alternative to smartphone cameras for those looking to graduate from the world of smartphone photography.

I added the "you" with the alphabets on the Alpha + Bits Stickers to complete the sentiment.

Then I strategically covered up the numbered list on the left side with flowers.

It makes for a?easy friendly card!

And the Thankful line is not just for Thanksgiving!

It is also very homey and family friendly!

?The flags I used here are not even the new ones designed to go with the Thankful line.
They are actually the "Fall" and "Home Sweet Home" flags from the first flags release earlier this year.?
But they coordinate so well!

Cardinal Martini, figure of hope for Church reform, dies

Italian cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, a progressive who pushed for a rethink on modern issues and was once tipped as a possible pope, died on Friday aged 85, the Archbishop of Milan said.

Martini, himself a former archbishop of Milan who advocated reform on issues such as contraception and the role of women in the Church, had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for years and his condition had degenerated this week.

"He was a great man, a great scholar, he taught us a lot," a priest who did not want to be named told journalists as he left Martini's bedside.

The elderly prelate, who served as archbishop of Milan from 1980 to 2002, was revered by reform-seekers in the Church, in particular for his dream of holding a third Vatican Council to modernise key aspects of Catholic dogma.

He died in a Jesuit retreat house near Milan, where he had been living for the past few years, which had special facilities for sick prelates. Relatives and friends had gathered to be with Martini in his final hours, reports said.

Tipped as a possible pope in the run up to a conclave to elect a new pontiff in 2005, Martini was a popular figure who commanded great respect from both John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

But his progressive stance on highly sensitive issues, which ruffled feathers in some quarters of Church despite Martini's diplomatic and measured approach, meant his chances of being elected to Saint Peter's Chair were slim.

The intellectual, who wrote dozens of theological tomes in his life, also revealed in 2002 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and his health issues may also have persuaded voters to favour other candidates.

Martini was a realist who warned the Church it would have to become more flexible with regard to its traditional mores, or risk alienating Catholics.

He was considered a constructive critic, who was always careful not to offend traditionalists but spoke out clearly against several hardline issues.

In 2008 he criticised the Church's prohibition of birth control, saying that the stance had likely driven many faithful away, and publicly stated in 2006 that condoms could "in some situations, be a lesser evil."

In terms of priest celibacy -- a hot topic particularly in the wake of the clerical sex abuse scandal -- Martini felt an "evolution" was inevitable, though he did not believe the Church should give up the practice entirely.

Though he was friends with John Paul II, the pair differed in opinion on some topics, particularly on whether the Church had done enough to modernise.

In 1999, Martini said he "had a dream" for a Third Vatican Council, which would take up where Vatican II left off in 1965 and further revise dogma.

The third council would address the decline in priest numbers, women in the Church, sexuality, and the institution of marriage, among other things.

Martini, who went to a Jesuit-run school before being ordained as a priest, had a successful academic career and was reputed to speak 11 languages.

He retired from the post of Archbishop at the mandatory age of 75 and fulfilled a dream to study in Jerusalem, before returning to Italy in 2008 and moving into the Jesuit house near Milan where he spent his final years.

'Nano machine shop' shapes nanowires, ultrathin films

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new "nano machine shop" that shapes nanowires and ultrathin films could represent a future manufacturing method for tiny structures with potentially revolutionary properties.

The structures might be tuned for applications ranging from high-speed electronics to solar cells and also may have greater strength and unusual traits such as ultrahigh magnetism and "plasmonic resonance," which could lead to improved optics, computers and electronics.

The researchers used their technique to stamp nano- and microgears; form tiny circular shapes out of a material called graphene, an ultrathin sheet of carbon that holds promise for advanced technologies; and change the shape of silver nanowires, said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

"We do this shaping at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, like a nano-machine shop," said Cheng, who is working with doctoral students Ji Li, Yiliang Liao, Ting-Fung Chung and Sergey Suslov and physics professor Yong P. Chen.

Graphene and nanowires -- filaments 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- have numerous potential applications. However, technologies are needed to tailor them for specific uses. The new method, called laser shock-induced shaping, makes it possible to tune nanowires by altering electrical and optoelectrical properties that are critical for electronic components.

The researchers also have shown how laser shock-induced shaping can be used to change the properties of graphene, a step toward harnessing the material for electronic applications.

Findings were detailed in research papers published in the journal Nano Letters, and the work also was highlighted earlier this month in the News and Views section of the journal Nature Photonics.

The technique works by using a multilayered sandwich structure that has a tiny mold at the bottom. Nanowires were situated directly above the mold, and other materials were layered between the nanowires and a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered "forming unit" to an ultra-fast pulsing laser causes one of the layers to burn up, generating a downward pressure that forces the nanowires into the mold and changes their shape.

"The process could be scaled up for an industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing process by changing laser beam size and scanning speed," Cheng said. "The laser shock-induced shaping approach is fast and low-cost."

Part of the research, funded by the National Science Foundation, was carried out in a specialized clean room at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.

Australia reopens probe of 1982 anti-Israel bombings

Australian police Sunday reopened inquiries into the 1982 bombing of the Israeli consulate in Sydney and a Jewish club, reportedly after interviewing an extremist jailed over a blast on a Pan Am flight that year.

No one was killed but two people were injured in the attacks on the consulate and the Jewish Hakoah sports club in Bondi on December 23, 1982 -- crimes that have gone unsolved for almost 30 years.

But police reopened the case Sunday, publishing photographs of two male suspects, after a review of the Sydney bombings reportedly led them to convicted extremist Mohammed Rashed, in jail for a blast on Pan Am flight 830.

A Japanese teenager died and 15 others were wounded when a bomb exploded on the flight from Tokyo to Honolulu on August 11, 1982.

"This review, and a range of enquiries here and overseas, were able to establish that there were sufficient grounds to warrant a formal re-investigation into the bombings upon the Israeli consulate and Hakoah Club in 1982," said assistant commissioner Peter Dein, head of the counter-terrorism squad.

"It was luck more than anything else that no one was killed in these bombings, and while it is almost 30 years ago we know there are people out there living with the knowledge or guilt of these crimes."

Dein refused to confirm the link to Rashed but several media reports citing police sources close to the case said the Jordanian-born explosives expert had been interviewed by officers in the US and was key to the case being reopened.

Rashed was part of an Iraq-based pro-Palestinian group, 15 May, that targeted US and Israeli interests in the 1980s, and he received leniency in his Pan Am sentence for cooperating with international authorities as an informant.

Sydney police have long believed 15 May, named for the date of the first Arab-Israeli war, was linked to the Hakoah club and consulate bombings.

Dein said the investigation would apply "new technologies and investigative procedures to an historical crime".

Two people, including a Hungarian holocaust survivor, were wounded when a bomb went off in a stairwell of the Israeli consulate in central Sydney at 2:00 pm on December 23, 1982.

The second bomb, detonated about five hours later in the Hakoah Club's carpark, failed to explode properly and did not injure anyone, but there was extensive damage to the car it was in and two others nearby.

There were a "large number" of athletes inside the building at the time, according to police.
