Some developers at Microsoft Studios are saying goodbye to retail. At a press conference Thursday, Microsoft revealed Lift London. Unlike other European studios, Lift London will focus on developing games for the cloud that can be accessed from a mobile device, tablet, and TV.
Lift London will be headed up by ex-Rare developer Lee Schuneman, Eurogamer reports.
Schuneman explained why Lift London will be focusing on the mobile space: ?The studio?s mission is to be bold and brave and to lift the reach of the Xbox service beyond the console. If you look at the size of the tablet market today, it?s measured in the hundreds of millions, and that?s the area where we aspire to be.?
He said Microsoft will obviously continue making retail products, but he touted the benefits of Lift London emphasizing cloud-based distribution: ?[Microsoft Studios executive] Phil [Harrison]?s view ? one I support ? is that the traditional game release model, which has a massive upfront design, development and marketing cost and a relatively short 16-week window after the game comes out for returns, is changing.?
From the statements, it seems Lift London will deliver smaller titles on a multi-platform cloud instead of releasing huge games on a single console or device.
Lift London will not be working alone. It?s already partnering up with?Dlala Studios, who will work from Lift London?s offices?in the Soho Productions building to create a new IP.
It?s not surprising Microsoft is pushing multi-platform, cloud-based distribution. Steam, Valve?s digital distribution service, has been massively successful in revitalizing the PC as a gaming platform. Going multi-platform through the cloud also means more accessibility.
What do you guys think? Is Lift London?s emphasis on multi-platform, cloud-based distribution and smaller titles a good idea? Do Lift London?s goals seem obvious in today?s video game market? Make sure to comment below.
