Badgers football: Offense was power struggle for Matt Canada, Bret Bielema

LOS ANGELES ? After 12 games as offensive coordinator for the University of Wisconsin football team, Matt Canada finally had enough.

Prior to the Big Ten Conference title game against Nebraska, Canada went in to talk to former UW coach Bret Bielema and at long last put his foot down. Sink or swim, it was time for Canada to do things his way.

Numerous UW sources said Canada's decision to stand up to Bielema was a significant factor in the offensive outburst that followed. The Badgers amassed 640 yards, including 539 on the ground, in the 70-31 victory over Nebraska on Dec. 1, sending UW to the Rose Bowl where it will face Stanford on Tuesday.

The brilliant game plan stands as a crowning achievement in Canada's 21 seasons in college coaching, but it wouldn't have happened if he had not fought for the things he believed in.

The sources for this story ? who are close to the football program and the coaching staff ? spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were told the information in confidence.

Canada was asked this week if he'd ever called a game in which everything seemed to work as well as it did against Nebraska.

"That was a special night," he said, simply. "No doubt about it."

Canada acknowledged the meeting with Bielema but downplayed its significance.

"Bret and I talked every week," Canada said. "There wasn't any clearing of the air."

But the Badgers certainly looked like a different offense in that game ? Canada's offense ? unveiling a variety of formations, trick plays and things UW had not shown all season.

Bielema, who has a defensive background, got more heavily involved in the offense after the departure of coordinator Paul Chryst after last season.

According to the sources, Bielema railed against the use of fly sweeps ? with running backs or wide receivers going in motion behind the quarterback, sometimes getting the ball or just forcing the defense to honor the edges ? and thought the Badgers should have been good enough to simply be a power running team.

But they weren't good enough, especially at the start of the season, with the departure of seven starters off the record-setting 2011 offense that averaged 44.1 points per game.

A dispute over one of the plays Canada installed for the Big Ten title game highlighted the differences between Bielema and Canada.

The play, according to the sources, was run out of the Barge formation, in which tailback James White was at quarterback and handed the ball to tailback Montee Ball on a fly sweep.

Bielema didn't like how the tight end on the play side kicked out to make a block in the alley and wanted to change the play. There was also the risk of one tailback handing off to another and, in fact, when the play was run in the game Ball slightly bobbled the handoff.

After Bielema relented and gave his consent to run the play the way Canada wanted, Ball scored the first of his three touchdowns on it, a 16-yard run around left end in which he dove for the pylon from the 4-yard line to put UW ahead 35-10.

"There's risk and reward," Canada said when asked about the play. "If we would have fumbled that and the game was close, everyone would be saying, 'You've got James White handing it to Montee Ball.' "

Bielema's more heavy-handed tactics during the season, according to the sources, included overruling some of Canada's play calls on the coaches' headset during games.

Canada didn't dismiss that directly but said he takes responsibility for all of the calls during the season.

"I would say, I called every play," he said. "There are a lot of things that go into offensive football. We all were involved. We have a great staff. We tried to do the best we could."

It has undoubtedly been a trying season for Canada, who thought he'd landed his dream job and hoped to be here for a long time ? certainly long enough for his daughter, a freshman, to finish high school in Verona.

Instead, he's uprooting his family again after one year and leaving after the Rose Bowl to become the offensive coordinator at North Carolina State.

Not only did Canada follow a popular and successful coordinator in Chryst, the offense bogged down early with issues at quarterback, an injury to the team's only threat at wide receiver in Jared Abbrederis and a rare coaching switch on the offensive line, with the firing of Mike Markuson and the promotion of graduate assistant Bart Miller.

Bielema said the 70 points against Nebraska were a sign of how much the offensive staff grew this season.

"We prepared for the Big Ten championship game just like we had all year," Bielema said in a telephone interview last weekend when asked about the meeting with Canada. "The part that really, I think, showed up in that game is we prepared with an attitude all week.

"That was something I really saw come out. Offense, defense and special teams, we practiced some things that hadn't showed up and they finally showed up in the Nebraska game, obviously, with great results."

Still, behind the scenes, it was an ongoing struggle for control of the offense, according to the sources.

Canada acknowledged one mistake he made was sticking with the things that had been successful at UW in the past for too long.

"Early on, the respect I had for what Wisconsin is and the system that was there, that was probably the biggest (failure) ? I tried to just keep doing what has always been done and we needed to do some different things," he said.

Canada started tweaking the offense as the season went along. He unveiled the Barge, with White at quarterback and extra linemen, a formation Canada had used previously. He also introduced more shifts and motions, with great success.

The Badgers averaged 16.3 points and 276 yards in the first three games, then 35.1 points and 437.7 yards over the last 10.

"I'll take all of the accountability for us maybe not getting off to the best start we could," Canada said. "It was finding the right fits, finding the right guys, certain players growing into their roles. We lost a lot of very good players. We had to find our niche. I think we did that."

Bielema denied he overruled any of Canada's calls during a game.

"I never once said, 'No, don't call that,' " Bielema said. "That's probably more coffee talk than anything. I have a great relationship with Matt. I treated Matt the same way I treated Paul.

"The part that was really fun for me was to see was Matt grow, obviously, with a very, very difficult staffing situation."

While things didn't work out as he hoped, Canada said he has no issues with his working relationship with Bielema.

"I appreciate him hiring me to come work at Wisconsin," Canada said. "No issues, no problems. Everything was good."

Canada took the heat all season for any offensive shortcomings, always accepting responsibility when things didn't work out.

One of the things Canada is proudest of was when an offensive player, whom he declined to name, thanked him for his approach to the Big Ten title game.

"Probably the proudest thing I had, one of our good players, just saying after it was over, 'Coach, I appreciate you taking every shot (and) standing behind us,' " Canada said.

"There wasn't any finger pointing throughout the year. For me personally, that's my proudest (moment), 'Coach you took every shot and didn't ever point a finger.' "

Pakistan official: 19 killed in attack on Shiites

(AP) ? A suicide bomber driving a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into a bus carrying Shiite Muslim pilgrims in southwest Pakistan on Sunday, killing 19 people, a government official and eyewitnesses said.

Earlier Sunday, 21 tribal policemen believed to have been kidnapped by the Taliban were found shot dead in Pakistan's troubled northwest tribal region, government officials said.

Pakistan has experienced a spike in killings over the last year by radical Sunni Muslims targeting Shiites who they consider heretics. The violence has been especially pronounced in Baluchistan province, where the latest attack occurred.

In addition to the 19 people killed in the bombing in Baluchistan's Mastung district, 25 others were wounded, many of them critically, said Tufail Ahmed, a local political official. The blast completely destroyed the bus that was hit and damaged a second bus carrying Shiites that was close by.

An eyewitness who was traveling in the second bus told Pakistan's Geo TV that first bus contained over 40 pilgrims headed to neighboring Iran, a majority Shiite country that is a popular religious tourism destination.

A second eyewitness said the bomber rushed by in a pick-up truck, swerved in front of the first bus and slammed on the brakes. The bus slammed into the pick-up truck and then a big explosion occurred.

Neither of the eyewitnesses provided their names while being interviewed on TV.

Shiites make up around 15 percent of Pakistan's 190 million people. They are scattered around the country, but the province of Baluchistan has the largest community, mainly made up of ethnic Hazaras, easily identified by their facial features which resemble those of Central Asians.

Sunni extremists have long carried out attacks against Shiites in Pakistan. But the sectarian campaign has stepped up in recent years, fueled mainly by the radical group Laskar-e-Jangvhi, aligned to Pakistani Taliban militants headquartered in the tribal region. More than 300 Shiites have been killed in Pakistan this year, according to Human Rights Watch.

The violence has pushed Baluchistan in particular deeper into chaos. The province was already facing an armed insurgency by ethnic Baluch separatists who frequently attack security forces and government facilities. But the secessionist violence has been overtaken by increasingly bold attacks against Shiites.

The sectarian bloodletting adds another layer to the turmoil in Pakistan, where the government is fighting an insurgency by the Pakistani Taliban and where many fear Sunni hardliners are gaining strength. Shiites and rights group say the government does little to protect Shiites and that militants are emboldened because they are believed to have links to Pakistan's intelligence agencies.

The 21 tribal policemen who were shot dead were found by officials shortly after midnight Sunday in the Jabai area of Frontier Region Peshawar after being notified by one policeman who escaped, said Naveed Akbar Khan, a top political official in the area. Another policeman was found seriously wounded, said Khan.

The 23 policemen went missing before dawn Thursday when militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons attacked two posts in Frontier Region Peshawar. Two policemen were also killed in the attacks.

Militants lined the policemen up on a cricket pitch late Saturday night and gunned them down, said another local official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Also Sunday, two Pakistani army soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the North Waziristan tribal area, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country, security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official policy.

Perodua to build new RM790m plant in Rawang, adding 100,000 ...

perodua-aminar

December is a quiet month for the auto industry, for obvious reasons, so we didn?t see this coming. Instead of holidaying, the management of Perodua and Daihatsu held a media briefing this morning, revealing huge plans for the Rawang-based carmaker. Perodua will invest RM790 million to set up a new company and a new manufacturing plant adjacent to its existing factory in Sungai Choh, north of Rawang.

The new 65,000 square metre facility and its holding company (same shareholder ratio as now) will create 1,200 new jobs and add 100,000 units to Perodua?s annual production capacity, which now stands at 200k with a two-shift cycle. The 100k figure is based on a single shift, so full capacity should be even higher. Mass production is scheduled to start in mid-2014.

Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said that the new plant will be ?world class? and have the same hardware, systems and processes as Daihatsu?s factory in Japan. While the ?new plant and old plant will complement each other,? the reason Perodua is building a new plant is because it?s easier to build a top level plant from scratch than upgrading a 19-year old one to meet the best standards.

?We want to jump start immediately, start from day one on a global level,? Aminar said. ?This new company will be a role model for our existing manufacturing plant. It will have improved systems, new tech, more automation and is environmentally friendly,? he added.

perodua-new-factory

The new plant will feature, among other things, increased automated welding (full automation for under and main body), automatic body accuracy measurement, the latest 3-Wet Waterborne Paint, enhanced dustproofing for the paint shop and a brighter/quieter working environment.

Besides adding more capacity, the new plant is part of a structural transformation process Perodua is undergoing to better face market liberalisation post-2016. The new culture and practices from the new company/plant and will be implemented on the current plant via a process Daihatsu calls Yokoten.

We?re some years away from 2016, but Perodua admits that it is already feeling the heat ? recent arrivals like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Almera (the latter sparking a price war of sorts) are encroaching into a price territory previously exclusive to national makes. Price aside, the new entries tout fuel efficiency as a selling point, and FC is one of the main reasons why Perodua is where it is today.

Faced with this, Perodua wants to reduce costs and improve quality to stay in the game. ?We have to do something about it, and we have to do it quickly ? it?s do or die for us. We cannot afford to be juara kampung,? Aminar declared. For readers outside of Malaysia, juara kampung can be translated to ?village champion.? Think of a big fish in a small pond.

aminar-rashid-salleh

?This new plant is part of our five-year strategic roadmap to stay competitive in the ever liberalising automotive industry by helping us be more productive and efficient, while at the same time reducing cost,? he added.

An extra 100,000 units per year sounds like a big jump, and it is ? with exports expected to account for only 20,000 units of total volume by 2015, some on the floor were scratching heads, wondering where all those extra cars will go.

Aminar replied that Perodua is only trying to protect is market leading share of 28% to 30%, and the big volume corresponds with projected total industry volume (TIV), which is expected to grow from the current figure of around 600,000.

CEO of Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) Mohamad Madani Sahari was at the event, and he told us that projected TIV for Malaysia is 750,000 units for 2015. You do the math.

With this announcement, Perodua is definitely ending the year with a bang. Some might have expected Daihatsu, which is big in Indonesia, to focus on our fast-growing neighbour as its base for ASEAN growth, but DMC has described Malaysia as a ?key base for its overseas business.?

GLHFCasting ? auto insurance-86322

auto insurance 86322 Every year, more drivers hit our roads and freeways. With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, crashes are going to happen. The difference between a small aggravation and large obstacle can be your car insurance. But why do you need to own insurance and just how much should you purchase? Your car insurance may be able to pay for the expenses from a car crash ranging from car repairs to replacement costs. Every state and province requires car insurance by law. By not purchasing insurance, you run the risk of having to pay the full price of the harm you cause others or to repair or replace your car if it is damaged or stolen. Liability: Liability pays for the expenses you are responsible for in a car collision, including property damage and injury. Damages from bodily injury can include medical fees, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes car repair costs and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your legal fees. Recommended, higher levels of insurance are available that take care of more events than the stripped-down, state-mandated varieties. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for all medical treatment for you and your passengers, regardless of who was at fault in the accident. It is sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage. The minimum amount of this insurance is usually set by local government. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault; it will pay despite who carries responsibility for a crash. All necessary medical or funeral expenses will be paid for under this insurance policy. Collision: Pays for damages to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Cover your car from damages from other sources when you buy this type of coverage. This may include protection from robbery, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: If you are hit by a driver without insurance, this type of insurance coverage will protect you. Under-Insured Motorist: There are other drivers who have liability insurance that might not be able to cover all the expenses they are responsible for. This type of insurance covers you in accidents involving those drivers. Emergency road service, car rental, and other varieties of coverage can also be purchased.

Cowboys' Brent indicted in crash killing teammate

(AP) ? A grand jury in Texas has formally indicted Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent on one count of intoxication manslaughter.

Brent is charged in connection with a Dec. 8 crash that killed his friend and Cowboys practice squad member Jerry Brown. He is out of jail on $100,000 bond.

Dallas County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon says the indictment was returned Wednesday.

Police in the Dallas suburb of Irving say Brent was speeding when his vehicle struck a curb and flipped. Brown was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Intoxication manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Brent could be eligible for probation.

Denmon says no court dates have been scheduled.

Rush University Medical Center scientists home in on cause of osteoarthritis pain

Rush University Medical Center scientists home in on cause of osteoarthritis pain [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Dec-2012

(CHICAGO)--Researchers at Rush University Medical Center, in collaboration with researchers at Northwestern University, have identified a molecular mechanism central to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) pain, a finding that could have major implications for future treatment of this often-debilitating condition.

"Clinically, scientists have focused on trying to understand how cartilage and joints degenerate in osteoarthritis. But no one knows why it hurts," said Dr. Anne-Marie Malfait, associate professor of biochemistry and of internal medicine at Rush, who led the study. An article describing the research was published in the December 11 print version of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Joint pain associated with OA has unique clinical features that provide insight into the mechanisms that cause it. First, joint pain has a strong mechanical component: It is typically triggered by specific activities (for example, climbing stairs elicits knee pain) and is relieved by rest. As structural joint disease advances, pain may also occur in rest. Heightened sensitivity to pain, including mechanical allodynia (pain caused by a stimulus that does not normally evoke pain, such as lightly brushing the skin with a cotton swab), and reduced pain-pressure thresholds are features of OA.

Malfait and her colleagues took a novel approach to unraveling molecular pathways of OA pain in a surgical mouse model exhibiting the slow, chronically progressive development of the disease. The study was conducted longitudinally, that is, the researchers were able to monitor development of both pain behaviors and molecular events in the sensory neurons of the knee and correlate the data from repeated observations over an extended period.

"This method essentially provides us with a longitudinal 'read-out' of the development of OA pain and pain-related behaviors, in a mouse model" Malfait said.

The researchers assessed development of pain-related behaviors and concomitant changes in dorsal root ganglia (DRG), nerves that carry signals from sensory organs toward the brain. They found that a chemokine known as monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (CCL2) and its receptor, chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2), are central to the development of pain associated with knee OA.

Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 regulates migration and infiltration of monocytes into tissues where they replenish infection-fighting macrophages. Previous research has shown that MCP-1/CCR2 are central in pain development following nerve injury.

In the study, following surgery the laboratory mice developed mechanical allodynia that lasted 16 weeks. Levels of MCP-1, CCR2 mRNA and protein were temporarily elevated, and neuronal signaling activity increased in the DRG at eight weeks after surgery. This result correlated with the presentation of movement-provoked pain behaviors (for instance, mice with OA travelled less distance, when monitored overnight, and climbed less often on the lid of their cage suggesting that they avoid movement that triggers pain) which were maintained up to 16 weeks.

Mice that lack Ccr2 (knockout mice) also developed mechanical allodynia, but this began to resolve from eight weeks onward. Despite having severe allodynia and structural knee joint damage equal to that in normal mice, Ccr2-knockout mice did not develop movement-provoked pain behaviors at eight weeks.

To confirm the key role of CCR2 signaling in development of the observed movement-provoked pain behavior after surgery, the researchers administered a CCR2 receptor-blocker to normal mice at nine weeks after surgery and found that this reversed the decrease in distance traveled, that is, movement-provoked pain behavior.

Interestingly, levels of MCP-1 and CCR2 returned to baseline or lower by 16 weeks in mice exhibiting movement-provoked pain behaviors. This finding may suggest that the MCP-1/CCR2 pathway is involved only in the initiation of changes in the DRG, but once macrophages are present, the process is no longer dependent on increased MCP-1/CCR2.

"Increased expression of both MCP-1 and its receptor CCR2 may mediate increased pain signaling through direct excitation of DRG neurons, as well as through attracting macrophages to the DRG," the researchers said.

"This is an important contribution to the field of osteoarthritis research. Rather than looking at the cartilage breakdown pathway in osteoarthritis, Dr. Malfait and her colleagues are looking at the pain pathway, and this can take OA research in to a novel direction that can lead to new pain remedies in the future," said Dr. Joshua Jacobs, professor and chairman of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center.

Treatment of OA in the United States costs almost $200 billion annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is expected that by 2030 nearly 70 million adults in the U.S. will have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, an estimated 27 million Americans live with OA, but, despite the frequency of the disease, its cause is still not completely known and there is no cure. In fact, many different factors may play a role in whether or not you get OA, including age, obesity, injury or overuse and genetics.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the oldest and most common forms of arthritis and is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage. Cartilage is the part of the joint that cushions the ends of the bones and allows easy movement of joints. The breakdown of cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint.

How To Limit Hard Drive Data Recovery Costs | Computers and ...

With the value on information rising day by day, one of thegreatest threats to businesses of any size is data loss. If thedata centers in your business have ever experienced a hard drivedisaster, you quicky realized just how valuable the informationlost is.

And then, the situation becomes even worse, when you realizehow much it is going to cost for a disaster recovery specialistto try and retrieve or restore your data for you.

Here are some basic tips for avoiding such a situation.

1. If you company is using older computers, be sure your techsupport is regulary checking for any problems on your harddrives. By discovering problems before they have a chance towreak havock on your data, they will have an opportuntiy to backthe data up before it is no longer retrievable.

2. Make sure your techies are giving you the old hard diskswhen they do hard drive upgrades on your systems. Even when theinformation has been copied onto new disks, the old drives stillcontain all your valuable data. You don?t want this getting intothe wrong hands. Plus, it is always good to have

a backup whilethe new hardware is settling in.

3. Especially in a fast paced office environment, the thousandsof computer files can become disorganized over time. Make sureyour computer support is running defragmentation programs on aregular basis.

4. Keep the operating systems the same across all machines inyour office. This will help prevent hard drive corruption fromvarious users incorrectly installing programs on a system theyare not familiar with. Better yet, leave program installation, removal and system partitioning to your tech support.

5. Make sure employess report any problems that crop up ontheir machines. If even one computer starts acting strangely, running slower, or giving error messages, have support run ascan disk or CHKDSK immediately. Remember, it will be muchcheaper to repair one computer?s hard drive than to pick up thetab after a total system disaster!

Keeping the following tips in mind when creating your data lossdisaster prevention plan will help limit not only headaches, butlosses to your bottom line.

The Parenting App You'll Never Download

On Sunday morning, Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association, told the world that armed guards stopped school shootings in Israel. Israel begs to differ. "Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing," LaPierre said sitting calmly on Meet the Press. "They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school, and they have not had a problem since then."

Clays on Mars: More plentiful than expected

Friday, December 21, 2012

A new study co-authored by the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates that clay minerals, rocks that usually form when water is present for long periods of time, cover a larger portion of Mars than previously thought. In fact, Assistant Professor James Wray and the research team say clays were in some of the rocks studied by Opportunity when it landed at Eagle crater in 2004. The rover only detected acidic sulfates and has since driven about 22 miles to Endeavour Crater, an area of the planet Wray pinpointed for clays in 2009.

The study is published online in the current edition of Geophysical Research Letters.

The project, which was led by Eldar Noe Dobrea of the Planetary Science Institute, identified the clay minerals using a spectroscopic analysis from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The research shows that clays also exist in the Meridiani plains that Opportunity rolled over as it trekked toward its current position.

"It's not a surprise that Opportunity didn't find clays while exploring," said Wray, a faculty member in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "We didn't know they existed on Mars until after the rover arrived. Opportunity doesn't have the same tools that have proven so effective for detecting clays from orbit."

The clay signatures near Eagle crater are very weak, especially compared to those along the rim and inside Endeavour crater. Wray believes clays could have been more plentiful in the past, but Mars' volcanic, acidic history has probably eliminated some of them.

"It was also surprising to find clays in geologically younger terrain than the sulfates," said Dobrea. Current theories of Martian geological history suggest that clays, a product of aqueous alteration, actually formed early on when the planet's waters were more alkaline. As the water acidified due to volcanism, the dominant alteration mineralogy became sulfates. "This forces us to rethink our current hypotheses of the history of water on Mars," he added.

Even though Opportunity has reached an area believed to contain rich clay deposits, the odds are still stacked against it. Opportunity was supposed to survive for only three months. It's still going strong nine years later, but the rover's two mineralogical instruments don't work anymore. Instead, Opportunity must take pictures of rocks with its panoramic camera and analyze targets with a spectrometer to try and determine the composition of rock layers.

"So far, we've only been able to identify areas of clay deposits from orbit," said Wray. "If Opportunity can find a sample and give us a closer look, we should be able to determine how the rock was formed, such as in a deep lake, shallow pond or volcanic system."

As for the other rover on the other side of Mars, Curiosity's instruments are better equipped to search for signs of past or current conditions for habitable life, thanks in part to Opportunity. Wray is a member of Curiosity's science team.

Fitch warns fiscal cliff could cost U.S. its AAA rating

LONDON (Reuters) - Ratings firm Fitch said on Wednesday it is more likely to strip the United States of its triple-A status if a political deal is not reached to halt $600 billion of spending cuts and tax hikes set for early next year.

"Failure to avoid the fiscal cliff ... would exacerbate rather than diminish the uncertainty over fiscal policy, and tip the U.S. into an avoidable and unnecessary recession," Fitch said in its 2013 global outlook, published on Wednesday.

"That could erode medium-term growth potential and financial stability. In such a scenario, there would be an increased likelihood that the U.S. would lose its AAA status."

Fitch currently assigns the United States its highest rating but with a negative outlook. Peer Standard & Poor's has already downgraded the world's biggest economy, lowering the United States to AA+ in August 2011 - a move which appears to have done little to dull the attraction of U.S. bonds for investors.

Fitch added that an agreement on a multi-year deficit reduction plan to stabilize U.S. debt and public finances was likely to see the country keep its triple-A rating.

However, it went on to say that: "failure to put in place a credible fiscal consolidation strategy during 2013 would be likely to result in the U.S. losing its AAA status."

Prologue: Pieces of History ? Merry Christmas from Space!

Telegram from Gordon Schorb, December 12, 1958, Eisenhower Presidential Library

Once upon a time, space was quiet. This was before satellites had cluttered the orbit of the earth, beaming TV shows and text messages and GPS coordinates.

Before 1958, space was very quiet.

On December 18, 1958, the Air Force placed the first communications satellite, a Project SCORE relay vehicle, into orbit.

And then, on December 19, the sound of the a human voice was transmitted through space. It was the voice of President Eisenhower, broadcasting a message of peace to the world below.

This is the President of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance, my voice is coming to you from a satellite circling in outer space. My message is a simple one. Through this unique means, I convey to you and all mankind America?s wish for peace on earth and good will to men everywhere.

Press release from the White House, December 19, 1958. Eisenhower Presidential Library.

?

Fewer than 100 people knew about the project, called SCORE (Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment). The goal was to put an Atlas missile into orbit and to show that communications satellites could transmit messages to Earth. It was a huge technological breakthrough and a milestone in the space race.

Sputnik 1 had been successfully launched in 1957 and had an onboard radio-transmitter. The satellite in the SCORE project used a tape recorder to store and forward voice messages?it was the first satellite to relay messages, making Eisenhower?s the first human voice to be heard in space.

The Christmas message was a last-minute change of plans. The Atlas launcher had already been sealed with prerecorded messages when the director of the project persuaded President Eisenhower to include a message of peace. The new message had to be changed through radio transmission, which meant that there was a chance the message might be overheard, and the President did not want to be ?scooped? by the media. But the change was successful, and the message remained secret until the official broadcast.

KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? It?s The King?s Speech meets FDR?s breach.

In June of 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife hosted England?s King and Queen for a weekend at the chief executive?s country estate in upstate New York, at Hyde Park on Hudson ? the first time a reigning English monarch ever visited the United States.

That?s the real-life setup for the seriocomic docudrama, Hyde Park on Hudson, with British reserve being contrasted with American exuberance and Britain facing an imminent war with Germany, an undertaking that diplomatic King George hopes desperately will win FDR?s support and thus that of isolationist America.

(2 stars out of 4)

(2 stars out of 4)

But geopolitics takes somewhat of a back seat to the sexual geometry of the Roosevelt household, under the roof of which during this royal weekend temporarily reside the president?s seemingly estranged wife, imposing mother, and at least two accommodating mistresses.

Hmmm.

Everything is seen through the eyes of Margaret ?Daisy? Stuckley, played by Laura Linney, a distant cousin and confidante of the president who is summoned to the White House as the film opens and is told that the president, always under stress and needing to relax, would benefit greatly from her company.

But Daisy?s story, which early on would appear central to the film as she delivers intermittent voiceover narration, remains underdeveloped, dropping right off the priority chart as soon as the high stakes of potential U.S. involvement in World War II land on the table.

Bill Murray, of all people, plays Roosevelt in his first starring role in seven years. He doesn?t attempt an impersonation, but he does completely submerge his comic goofball persona and delivers a credible FDR who?s droll, resourceful, charming, self-deprecatory, manipulative, and ultimately sympathetic.

As for Linney, she seems stuck in a thankless role that seems both inauthentic and incomplete.

Olivia Williams plays First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Wilson is FDR?s mother, Sara, and Elizabeth Marvel his savvy and pragmatic secretary, Marguerite ?Missy? LeHand, also, apparently, a mistress.

Meanwhile, King George VI, played by Samuel West, is the same person played by Colin Firth in The King?s Speech, with Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth.

When the two men meet and have a private discussion, they come to see the king?s severe stutter and Roosevelt?s polio as similarly incapacitating for world leaders.

But the film, directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Persuasion, Morning Glory, Venus), which is to a degree piggybacking on the appeal and success of The King?s Speech with its worldwide audience, leaves a sour taste.

The screenplay by Richard Nelson, based on his 2009 BBC radio play, which in turn was loosely based on entries in Daisy?s diaries and journals that were found after her death in 1991, is set in an era when the intimate secrets and infidelities of world leaders could and would be kept from the public. But Nelson and Michell take almost unconscionable liberties with the domestic arrangements ? especially in intimate sexual scenes that no one could have been witness to ? by depicting occurrences and relationships that seem highly speculative without being labeled as such.

The parallel of special relationships between nations and special relationships between people couldn?t be clearer. But there?s a loose-lips tastelessness that hovers over the otherwise respectable production.

So we?ll elect 2 stars out of 4 for the problematic sex-and-politics dramedy, Hyde Park on Hudson. Bill Murray is fun to watch as FDR, but the unsavory tabloid revelations about FDR playing whoops-a-Daisy are a bit much.
