(AP) ? President Barack Obama inspected the devastation from Sandy on Wednesday, flying high over flooded neighborhoods, sand-strewn streets and a burning fire that charred homes along the New Jersey coastline.

With Election Day less than a week away, Obama's visit to view the aftermath of the rare autumn storm was layered with political implications. The president's tour guide was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican and top supporter of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney who joined Obama on a Marine One helicopter ride over the region.

To the chagrin of some Republicans, Christie has lavished praise on Obama for his efforts in helping states deal with the storm.

Even though politics infuse every moment in the final week before Election Day, the White House sought to focus attention on the storm, an event that has given Obama an opportunity to project presidential leadership in the final days of the tightly contested White House race.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said there were no political motivations behind Obama's decision to join his supporter's rival Wednesday.

"This is not a time for politics," Carney said. "The president appreciates the efforts of governors, state and local officials across the various states that were affected by the storm, regardless of political party."

During the helicopter tour, Obama and Christie saw a carnival and a large pier that had been damaged, along with flattened houses and fragments of wood scattered throughout neighborhoods. Parts of the New Jersey shore's famed boardwalk was missing in sections and in one area, a fire was still burning and appeared to have taken out about eight homes.

As Obama and Christie flew over Point Pleasant Beach, sand and water could be seen covering several blocks of the community. But the president got a reminder of next week's election: someone had written "ROMNEY" in large letters in the sand at the north end of the beach.

Wednesday marked Obama's third straight day off the campaign trail. He canceled rallies across four battleground states and retreated to the White House to oversee the government's storm response. Obama stopped by FEMA headquarters in Washington before heading to New Jersey.

Obama planned to return to the campaign trail Thursday, with stops planned in Green Bay, Wis., Las Vegas and Boulder, Colo. He planned to be on the road campaigning every day through the Nov. 6 election.

Probiotics during pregnancy may protect baby against eczema ...

By Genevra Pittman, Reuters

Babies were less likely to get the itchy skin rash eczema when their mothers took probiotics during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, according to a study from Finland.

Researchers said it's possible that probiotics - which are thought to help balance bacteria populations in the gut and prevent disease-causing strains from spreading - may influence babies' health through immune cells that cross the placenta and later are passed in breast milk.

"Prevention regimen with specific probiotics administered to the pregnant and breast-feeding mother, that is, prenatally and postnatally, is safe and effective in reducing the risk of eczema in infants with allergic mothers," wrote lead author Samuli Rautava of Turku University Central Hospital, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

For the study, Rautava and his colleagues assigned 241 pregnant women to take one of two different probiotic combinations, given as a powder mixed with water once daily, or a bacteria-free placebo powder.

All of the mothers-to-be had a history of allergies, so their babies were at extra-high risk of eczema and other allergic reactions.

The women drank their assigned concoction for the last two months of pregnancy and their first two months of breastfeeding. Researchers then tracked their babies' health for two years to see how many developed rashes.

By the end of the study, 71 percent of babies in the placebo group had had eczema at least once, compared to 29 percent of babies whose mother took either probiotic combination.

Chronic eczema was diagnosed in 26 percent of placebo kids, compared to 10 percent and six percent, respectively, of those in the two probiotic groups.

However, by age two there was no difference in kids' sensitivities to a range of allergens, including milk, wheat, soy and dog and cat dander, based on whether their mothers had taken the supplements. About one quarter of the children had a positive "skin prick" test for sensitivity to an allergen.

"(The study) really shows a reduction in eczema from probiotics, which is such a simple and easy intervention for mothers,' said Ruchi Gupta, an allergy an eczema researcher at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

But she said it was still too soon to see if that reduction in eczema will be tied to a drop in asthma and more serious allergies later on, and Rautava himself said it was still not yet possible to make recommendations for routine use of probiotics.

Rautava and his colleagues didn't find any evidence of probiotic-related side-effects, and while there have been reports of infections attributed to probiotics in babies, giving the supplements to the mothers instead may reduce that risk.

But some researchers questioned whether the supplements sold on drugstore shelves have any real health benefits, especially including all the different strains available.

"The results look encouraging, but this is a controversial area and confirmation is needed," said James Gem, a pediatric allergy researcher from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Monster galaxy may have been stirred up by black-hole mischief

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have obtained a remarkable new view of a whopper of an elliptical galaxy that may have been puffed up by the actions of one or more black holes in its core.

Spanning a little more than one million light-years, the galaxy is about 10 times the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy. The bloated galaxy is a member of an unusual class of galaxies with a diffuse core filled with a fog of starlight where there would normally be a concentrated peak of light around a central black hole. Viewing the core is like seeing a city with no downtown, just houses sprinkled across a vast landscape.

Astronomers used Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 to measure the amount of starlight across the galaxy, dubbed A2261-BCG. The Hubble observations revealed that the galaxy's puffy core, measuring about 10,000 light-years, is the largest yet seen.

A galaxy's core size typically is correlated to the dimensions of its host galaxy, but in this case, the central region is much larger than astronomers would expect for the galaxy's size. In fact, the bloated core is more than three times larger than the center of other very luminous galaxies. Located three billion light-years away, the galaxy is the most massive and brightest galaxy in the Abell 2261 cluster.

Astronomers have proposed two possibilities for the puffy core. One scenario is that a pair of merging black holes gravitationally stirred up and scattered the stars. Another idea is that the merging black holes were ejected from the core. Left without an anchor, the stars began spreading out even more, creating the puffy-looking core.

Previous Hubble observations have revealed that supermassive black holes, weighing millions or billions times more than the Sun, reside at the centers of nearly all galaxies and may play a role in shaping those central regions.

"Expecting to find a black hole in every galaxy is sort of like expecting to find a pit inside a peach," explained astronomer Tod Lauer of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Ariz., a co-author of the Hubble study. "With this Hubble observation, we cut into the biggest peach and we can't find the pit. We don't know for sure that the black hole is not there, but Hubble shows that there's no concentration of stars in the core."

Team leader Marc Postman of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., said the galaxy stood out in the Hubble image. "When I first saw the image of this galaxy, I knew right away it was unusual," Postman explained. "The core was very diffuse and very large. The challenge was then to make sense of all the data, given what we knew from previous Hubble observations, and come up with a plausible explanation for the intriguing nature of this particular galaxy."

The paper describing the results appeared in the Sept. 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal. The astronomers expected to see a slight cusp of light in the galaxy's center, marking the location of the black hole and attendant stars. Instead, the starlight's intensity remained fairly even across the galaxy.

One possibility for the puffy core may be due to two central black holes orbiting each other. These black holes collectively could have been as massive as several billion suns. Though one of the black holes would be native to the galaxy, a second black hole could have been added from a smaller galaxy that was gobbled up by the massive elliptical.

In this scenario, stars circling in the giant galaxy's center came close to the twin black holes. The stars were then given a gravitational boot out of the core. Each gravitational slingshot robbed the black holes of momentum, moving the pair ever closer together, until finally they merged, forming one supermassive black hole that still resides in the galaxy's center.

Another related possibility is that the black-hole merger created gravity waves, which are ripples in the fabric of space. According to the theory of general relativity, a pair of merging black holes produce ripples of gravity that radiate away. If the black holes are of unequal mass, then some of the energy may radiate more strongly in one direction, producing the equivalent of a rocket thrust. The imbalance of forces would have ejected the merged black hole from the center at speeds of millions of miles an hour, resulting in the rarity of a galaxy without a central black hole. "The black hole is the anchor for the stars," Lauer explained. "If you take it out, all of a sudden you have a lot less mass. The stars don't get held down very well and they expand out, enlarging the core even more."

The team admits that the ejected black-hole scenario may sound far-fetched, "but that's what makes observing the universe so intriguing -- sometimes you find the unexpected," said Postman.

Added Lauer: "This is a system that's interesting enough that it pushes against a lot of questions. We have thought an awful lot about what black holes do. But we haven't been able to test our theories. This is an interesting place where a lot of the ideas we've had can come together and can be tested, fairly exotic ideas about how black holes may interact with each other dynamically and how they would affect the surrounding stellar population."

The team is now conducting follow-up observations with the Very Large Array radio telescope (VLA) in New Mexico. The astronomers expect material falling onto a black hole to emit radio waves, among other types of radiation. They will compare the VLA data with the Hubble images to more precisely pin down the location of the black hole, if it indeed exists.

The Abell 2261 cluster is part of a multi-wavelength survey, led by Postman, called the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). The survey probes the distribution of dark matter in 25 massive galaxy clusters.

The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and the European Space Agency. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Md., conducts Hubble science operations. STScI is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., in Washington.

Dinosaurs may have evolved feathers for courtship

Fossils of a feathered dinosaur have given wings to the idea that complex quilled feathers might have evolved for courtship, not flight, in at least one dinosaur species.

The species concerned, the ostrich-like Ornithomimus, seems to have had vaned feathers but neither it, nor its ancestors, ever seem to have taken to the air.

The new insights come from re-examination of a series of fossils found in North America. After finding two fossils in stream-bed deposits in Alberta, Canada, one in 2008 and the other in 2009, a local businessman contacted University of Calgary palaeontologist Darla Zelenitsky.

Technicians at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Midland Provincial Park, Alberta, then exposed filamentary feathers on the Ornithomimus remains as they removed the rock encasing the bones.

Feathery find

That discovery led them to check an adult Ornithomimus discovered in 1995 that had odd marks on its forearms. "We went back and found the traces on the forearms looked like marks left by the vaned feathers of modern birds," Zelenitsky says.

Feathers with central vanes or shafts are required for flight, but ornithomimids were bipedal dinosaurs and grew to 3.5 metres long ? far too large to fly. Falling between two feathered groups, birds and tyrannosaurs, on the evolutionary tree, they are not thought to have had flying ancestors.

Ornithomimids split from the evolutionary branch of birds long before flight evolved, so palaeontologists expected ornithomimids to have downy or filamentary feathers like tyrannosaurs.

Adults only

The vaned feathers were only found on the arms of a complete adult fossil; the arms of a year-old juvenile 1.5-metres long had only filamentary feathers. Why did the adults have stiff feathers like flying birds?

One possibility, Zelenitsky's team suggests in a paper published today in Science, is that the long arm feathers served as sexual displays. Another is that they shielded the young during brooding, an idea proposed more than a decade ago by biotechnology consultant and amateur palaeontologist Thomas Hopp.

Whatever their purpose, evolution preserved them for some 80?million years from the time ornithomimids evolved (about 155?million years ago) until the dinosaurs in the area died 70 million to 75?million years ago.

"Their interpretation looks good to me," says Richard Prum, a Yale University ornithologist. "If it is confirmed? then it implies an early origin of a non-aerodynamic 'wing' of long forelimb feathers [and] an exciting role for display and communication in the origin of feather diversity."

But the preservation of details in the coarse sandstone fossil is poor, says palaeontologist Thomas Holtz of the University of Maryland in College Park. He wants to see better-preserved specimens to be sure what type of feather structures were on the ornithomimids' arms.

West Seattle Blog? ? West Seattle restaurants: Inside Meander's ...

October 24, 2012 at 12:22 pm | In West Seattle news, West Seattle restaurants, White Center | 30 Comments

Story and photos by Keri DeTore
Reporting for West Seattle Blog/White Center Now

About Meander?s in White Center (opening the next two weekends for sneak previews):

First things first: the ventilation is AMAZING. See for yourself:

(Miranda even turned on the vent so I could feel the rush of air into the hood.)

With her forthcoming opening in the former Papa?s Pub in White Center (here?s our original report from 6 weeks ago), owner and chef Miranda Krone continues the evolution of what has become a favorite diner of people on our fair peninsula and beyond: Meander?s ? with breakfast served all the time except weekend nights, when it turns into a gourmet bistro.

With evolution comes change, and the first change you?ll notice is all the space:

There?s so much room that there will be a counter, a front room, a back room, and the seating capacity will be twice what?s currently available at the California Avenue location.

Miranda will have a pool table, books, and a jukebox for the back area, and is expanding her crew from five to seven.

What will feel very different is having the kitchen closed off from the dining area; this means less sass from the chef spicing up your meal.

However, you will immediately recognize the personal touches that give Meander?s its special feel: Vintage aprons, knick-knacks, art. These will be joined by antiques and other ephemera that Miranda has gathered over the years, to be displayed on the shelves behind the counter. Red velvet seating from Miranda?s home will welcome visitors when they walk in, ?I want it to feel like you?re walking into someone?s living room.? Payment is of course still ?cash only,? but ?with a cash machine located inside the diner!

A familiar face is joining the Meander?s crew: Matthew Darling, long-time West Seattleite and veteran of the WS restaurant industry, will be the ?front-of-the-house? manager, taking care of all service issues outside the kitchen.

Miranda says that Matthew and business partner Ed Kenoyer are a ?huge gift ? I couldn?t run this without them.?

Adds Matthew: ?The saying in West Seattle is that people now have to open new restaurants for me to work at, but it?s my favorite thing to be part of an opening and see the fun and excitement from the community and the owner ? it?s precious and exciting to me.?

The White Center business community is welcoming Meander?s with open arms, offering advice and assistance, and Miranda is hoping to join forces with the Rat City Business Association (WSB sponsor).

For the next two weekends, Friday through Sunday, Meander?s will host a soft opening with short days to get the ball rolling. Hours will be 8 am-1 pm Friday and Saturday, and 9 am-1 pm Sunday.

This weekend, as a special welcome, Miranda will be offering complimentary Caffe Vita coffee and mini versions of the beignets that are soon to be a regular menu item. Said Miranda excitedly: ?There?s a fryer!?

The California Avenue location will remain open regular hours as the transition is made over the next couple of weeks. Miranda notes this means her staff will be ?completely maxed out.? If the transition goes well, the White Center location should be open regular hours by mid-November. Late-night dining will remain at the California Avenue location for as long as possible, with White Center late night hours to be determined.

With all the new space, Miranda is looking forward to opportunities such as adding a stage for live music, burlesque and dinner theater. ?And,? she adds, ?we will start taking reservations for holiday parties!? Unless you were having a very small party, this would have been unthinkable at the California Avenue location. There was even mention of Matthew Darling hosting some karaoke.

Asked whether this expansion was part of her original vision, Miranda answers: ?I always thought I?d have a little coffee counter, but now I have all this room for all these wonderful people, so why not??

SIDE NOTE: You might also have heard of Miranda?s other new ?site? ? a Whidbey Island farm. We asked her how that plays into all this:

Sitting down quietly and watching the food grow, taking part in tending it, makes my heart feel better. I love cooking so much, and I love cooking under pressure. Turning a mad rush into off the cuff choreography that still has time for dips and twirls makes me grin ear to ear. But I also love the long, patient tending of the garden that takes months or years to come to fruition. There needs to be a balance, and a relationship between one and the other.

I will be dividing my personal residence between Arbor Heights & Whidbey Island for the time being. Over the winter months, I?ll be concentrating my focus on the new restaurant space in White Center. As we get settled in and spring approaches, I?ll begin to spend more time focusing on getting the farm set up to host guests.

And the terms of the lease? Include an agreement that I will use only sustainable growing methods, and agree not to use GMO seeds. I have the planting schedules from the past few years, and am very happy. :)

The intention behind the farm is to produce food (hopefully for the restaurant, itself) and to offer a space to connect with community on a deeply visceral level. I want to offer people the delight of taking part in creating the food they eat. I believe that many people want that connection. I myself very much do. I hope to create a space wherein creation, storytelling and shared meals are all part of the same process.

I am deeply excited about the people who have come forward with something to teach; something to share. Making beer, bread, cheese, fiber & spinning, exchanging stories with people you?ve not met before over the evening fire, or just a relaxing visit to a space where it?s ok to go sit by a tree and think about things for a while. That?s what our next step is. That?s what the farm is about.

9 Financial Tips for the Long-Distance Relationship

Let?s face it, long-distance relationships are pricey. You may not spend money on date nights every week, but you do spend a good chunk of money on plane tickets each month. Thankfully, there are ways to save?and even have enough money left over for the wedding! Here are some tips I?ve found useful while juggling my own long-distance relationship:

1. Keep your phone bill down. It?s so important to stay connected when you are in a relationship, especially a long-distance one, but you don?t want to end up with an outrageous phone bill. Fortunately, there are several options to keep your bill reasonable:

  • Get the same cell phone provider
  • Get a 5 friends plan and make your boyfriend/girlfriend one of them
  • Talk after 9:00 p.m.
  • Place the call using gmail (free in US)
  • Skype (free US and international, and you have the video option!)

2. Be creative. My friend?s boyfriend (who is now her husband) didn?t have much money. So, to afford a plane ticket, he sold his plasma. I don?t recommend this for those who get queasy at the sight of needles, but recycling bottles, working weekend event security, or babysitting your neighbor?s kids might bring in that extra cash you need.

3.?Take the cash. Do people ever ask what you want for your birthday or Christmas? Well, don?t be embarrassed to mention cash. They know you?re dying to see your loved one, so they?ll probably be happy to comply.

4.?Only travel as far as your wallet can take you. I know this is hard, but if you don?t have the money, don?t purchase the plane ticket. You?ll regret it later when the interest rates come knocking. I know several couples that are still trying to recover from travelling beyond their means while they were dating long-distance.

5.?Become a flight-booking expert. Shop around and figure out which airlines habitually fly most economically to that area. Then stalk their website to figure out the best day to purchase tickets. Usually, midweek is the cheapest time to book flights. You?ll also want to book as far ahead as possible to get the best price.

6.?Collect your miles. Don?t forget to get a frequent flyer card from every airline you fly. Then make sure you add every mile to your card. You?ll steadily work yourself up to a free ticket.

7.?Travel Smart. Baggage fees are expensive, so take only what you can carry on the plane. Girls, I understand this can be hard! But leave all those great shoes behind and pack light! Your wallet will thank you.

8.?Consider getting an airline credit card. Personally, I have benefitted from this. Not only did I get 20,000 miles when I signed up, I also accumulated miles with all the everyday purchases I made?whether groceries or gas. With every dollar, I earned miles towards my next flight. Of course, take this tip with a grain of salt; if you are bad with credit cards?don?t do it! To avoid getting into debt, commit to only charging what you have in the bank and don?t go over that amount.

9.?Avoid Splurging. Of course you want to go on fancy dates when you see each other, but don?t overdo it. Expensive dinners start to add up quickly; pretty soon you?ve spent half of your next plane ticket. Find a balance by mixing in free or inexpensive dates with some pricier ones. You may find that a picnic can be just as romantic as an expensive meal!

Ford to scrap Belgian plant to stem Europe losses

GENK, Belgium/MADRID (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co will close a Belgian factory employing more than 4,000 workers, shifting production to Spain as the U.S. automaker scrambles to cut costs and stem European losses.

It was the third time this year a mass-market carmaker has announced plans to close a plant in Europe as the region's debt crisis, government spending cuts and high unemployment hits consumer budgets and demand for new cars.

Ford said it would shut its Genk plant in eastern Belgium, with the loss of about 4,300 jobs by the end of 2014, transferring the work to a plant in Valencia.

"It's incredible," said Peter Aerts, one of the hundreds of workers who gathered outside the Genk plant where local managers announced the closure to union representatives on Wednesday.

"Just last month I got an invitation to celebrate 25 years working here."

Earlier this year, General Motors unit Opel said it aimed to close its Bochum plant in Germany after 2016, while France's PSA Peugeot Citroen said in July it would shutter its Aulnay plant near Paris in 2014.

Ford's British unions were also braced for bad news, after management scheduled a meeting for Thursday and media reports said Ford could also close its Southampton plant where it makes Transit vans and employs just over 500 people.

Ford Europe Chairman Stephen Odell confirmed the meeting but declined to comment further.

Car sales in Europe accelerated their decline in September, shrinking at the fastest pace in the past 12 months and carmakers have predicted the road to recovery in the region will be a long one, with some not expecting any let-up for two years.

"The outlook for the industry is not very positive for the foreseeable future," said Odell.

ROUGH SCENES

Union leader Luc Prenen said European-level managers did not attend the meeting in Genk, leaving local bosses to read a statement.

"After the announcement there were some rough scenes. There was some pushing and shoving but we managed to calm it down," said Prenen, the head of the ACV union.

"It was aimed at the management but they left quickly. It was also among each other as people were very angry and frustrated."

Belgium is no stranger to factory closures in the auto sector. General Motors shuttered its Opel Antwerp plant in 2010 and French carmaker Renault was slammed for its controversial decision to close its Vilvoorde plant on the outskirts of Brussels in 1997.

The shift to Spain also follows GM's May decision to produce the next generation of its Astra compact car in Britain, after workers agreed a pay deal, leaving its plant in Bochum, Germany in danger of closure.

Ford's plants in Genk, where the Mondeo mid-size car and Galaxy and S-MAX minivans are nearing the end of their life-cycles, and Valencia, which makes the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX compact multi-purpose vehicles, have not been running at full capacity.

Grouping production in one place should allow Ford make savings and wage costs are much lower in Spain than in Belgium.

Odell said capacity utilization was under 50 percent in Genk, and about 70-80 percent in Valencia.

He earlier described Ford's European restructuring in a statement as "a fundamental part of our plan to strengthen Ford's business in Europe and to return to profitable growth".

Ford Europe managers, including Odell, met Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo and Employment Minister Monica De Coninck at 1 p.m. (1100 GMT), after a separate meeting with members of the government of the plant's Dutch-speaking home region of Flanders.

Union leaders boycotted a meeting with Ford Europe executives scheduled for 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) in Brussels as European executives had not made the announcement in person.

"(The closure) came as a surprise and is depressing news for 10,000 people employed directly and indirectly. It's an unbelievable blow for the province of Limburg and for Belgium. It's a black day," Rohnny Champagne, provincial chairman of the ABVV-Metaal union, told Reuters by telephone.

Ford, which will present third-quarter results on October 30, doubled its European loss forecast for 2012 to $1 billion in July and said action was needed to "decrease our production to match real demand".

Third-quarter results from other carmakers showed the region's deepening woes. PSA Peugeot Citroen said on Wednesday third-quarter sales fell 3.9 percent.

Volkswagen's third-quarter profit fell by a fifth as the deepening slump in Europe's car market caught up with the region's biggest automaker.

Ford's Genk plant, which opened in 1964, has operated on a four-day week for much of 2012, unions say, with only 15 more production days planned this year, none of them in December.

In a recent research note, New York-based UBS analyst Colin Langan predicted that Ford would move to close a major plant in Europe, where its factories are running at 52 percent of maximum output on average this year, with Genk the likely candidate.

Closing the factory would cost an estimated $1.1 billion and generate annual savings of $730 million, Langan added.

Production of the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX compact multi-purpose vehicles could move from Valencia to Saarlouis, Germany, in 2014 under the proposed plan, it said.

Ford has about 6,000 workers in Spain, including 3,485 in Valencia. It did not say whether jobs would be created but any would be welcome in the region, one of Spain's most indebted with 26.3 percent unemployment.

Unions in Spain said no wage agreement was yet in place. The regional government said no tax incentives had been offered.

"This proves that the infrastructure policies undertaken in recent years ... and most of all our policies on reform and austerity, generate the confidence needed to attract multi-nationals," Valencia regional chief Alberto Fabra said.

Not supplying Stinger missiles to Syrian rebels: U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it had not supplied Stinger missiles to Syrian rebel forces and appeared to question intelligence from Moscow that the U.S.-made surface-to-air missiles had made their way into the opposition's hands.

Stinger missiles would help bring down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's warplanes and helicopters, which have bombed residential areas where rebels are hiding. More than 32,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

But in contrast to the Libya crisis last year, the West has shown little appetite to arm the Syrian rebels, worried that weapons would fall into the hands of Islamic militants.

Russia's top military officer Nikolai Makarov, the general staff chief, said Russia's military had learned that rebel forces "have portable missile launchers of various states, including American-made Stingers.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon that "I certainly don't know of us providing any such missiles in that area."

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States had provided no lethal assistance to rebel forces whatsoever, including Stingers.

"Nor will we," Nuland said.

Asked about the possibility that Stingers reached the rebels through a third party, she said: "If the Russian Federation has evidence of Stingers in the hands of the opposition, we'd like to see it."

Opposition activist footage has shown rebels carrying surface-to-air missiles made by the former Soviet Union, but footage of Stingers has yet to appear. Last week, activists posted videos of what they said was a Syrian military helicopter spiraling to the ground and exploding in flames.

Stingers are among the types of shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missiles commonly referred to as MANPADs.

"All of the images that we have seen of MANPADs and MANPAD-like equipment in Syria has been exclusively of a Soviet/Warsaw Pact vintage. The SA-7 type vintage," Nuland said.

"We have not seen evidence of Stingers."

Russia, which has supported Assad through the conflict, sold his government $1 billion worth of weapons last year and has made clear it would oppose an arms embargo in the U.N. Security Council.

The question of whether to arm the rebels has become an issue in the U.S. presidential election, with Republican candidate Mitt Romney accusing President Barack Obama of failing to show leadership in this area.

In their debate on Monday, Romney said the United States should work with partners to organize the Syrian opposition and "make sure they have the arms necessary to defend themselves."

Obama said Romney was wrong to suggest that giving rebels heavy weapons "is a simple proposition that would lead us to be safer over the long term."

Still, France's foreign minister warned last week that the rebels had already acquired heavy weapons - forcing the government's air force to bomb rebel-held zones indiscriminately from high altitude.

Keshi off to Durban, ready to face Africa?s best

SUPER Eagles boss, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, who is expected to fly out to Durban, South Africa, today to attend the draws of the 2013 African Nations Cup, which holds tomorrow, says he is not afraid of any team in the competition.

Keshi and NFF Technical Committee Chairman, Barrister Christopher Green, will join other NFF officials already in South Africa for the draws.

?I have told a lot of people and will say it again that I am not afraid of any team in the championship draws. You don?t win a championship by being afraid of your opponents and that is the spirit with which I am going to the draws,? he was quoted as saying.

The former NNB of Benin skipper says he has absolute respect for all the 16 teams that will take part in the championship, but fears none.

?Let them bring on any team and we will give our all, we have a team that the world too should be afraid of,? he declared.

On his part, Green said he was sure that Nigeria will get a favourable draw tomorrow, adding, ?we have a strong team but we also know that we want a good draw so that as we cruise in the championship we can stabilize and get our bearing right.?

Meanwhile, organizers of the draws have revealed the programme of events for all officials coming for the event.

Super Eagles secretary, Enebi Achor, who is one of the officials already in Durban, revealed that he would be attending a seminar for teams? officials today, followed by the draws tomorrow, while officials will tour the venues on Thursday. Friday will mark the departure of teams? officials from South Africa,? he revealed.

In through the outfield: Computing in the Clouds for Small Business

Many thanks to business and technology writer Carlo Pandian for contributing this post:

Everyone uses cloud computing services and many of us have been doing for some time ? even if we weren?t entirely aware of it!? From Hotmail to Facebook, cloud computing has been a helpful tool for millions of people the world over to manage their personal lives and communicate with friends across the globe.? Cloud computing solutions for small businesses have however, been taken up more slowly, despite offering huge benefits.? Small firms in particular have most to gain from ?the cloud??? So what is cloud computing and how can you benefit?

cloud-server

A typical cloud server

What is Cloud Computing?
Hotmail is a good example; it offers online access to your email account and allows you to access emails from any computer with an internet connection.? Unlike a desktop email software package all the data and any updates are dealt with remotely.? This is cloud computing in a very small nutshell.? New services, deliverable via the cloud, have been developing rapidly in the last couple of years or so.? Now, most software that you can install on your own computer can be found in cloud form.? From online accounting software, to media applications, the range is growing every day.? This has, in large part, been thanks to the rapid improvements in broadband capability in the last ten years and also to the explosion in popularity for mobile computing.?? These days, if it can?t be done on the go, then it?s probably not worth doing!

File Share and Back Up
Data back up and online document storage is essential tools for most businesses and is now available in cloud form.? In the old days, data back-up meant a memory stick, or even (the horror, the horror) a floppy disk.? This type of storage was extremely vulnerable to loss, theft or damage.? Remote back up via an online platform removes these risks at one simple stroke.?? There are an increasing number of providers who can offer online document storage and sharing options; Google Docs is one well known and well trusted brand, but there are other choices.? Check out Carbonite for a low cost and flexible option or Dropbox, which has been established for a number of years and is a firm favourite with many users.

Money Managing
Online accounting software offers incredible flexibility to small firms and the services on offer from Intuit are worth looking into.? Intuit is a world leader in providing small business solutions and the company?s range of accounting software is available in the old fashioned desktop variety and in the cloud version.? The latter allows small firms to keep records up to date and produce invoices on the go.? Most small business owners will immediately see the advantage of secure, online storage for their accounts along with the huge benefit in terms of time saving that cloud computing offers for those whose business keeps them out and about.

Small Screen Solutions
Online video conferencing facilities have been with us for some time now and there are a number of different providers.? SKYPE is well known and established in the field, although it has been designed specifically with the personal market in mind.? GoToMeeting is a good example of a more business focussed product in the cloud conferencing world.? There?s a free trial on the system and a range of different options to fit the needs of small, medium or larger businesses.? The basics package allows you to work effectively with colleagues or clients across the globe, while additional packages include one specifically designed to deliver training online, live and interactive.

The majority of cloud software available online comes with a free trial period which will allow you the chance to assess the usability of each system.? For many small businesses using cloud computing solutions will free up not only space on your hard drive but the most essential asset you have ? time. From online accounting software to video conferencing the world of cloud computing frees up time for small businesses to grow.

The Social Global Internet (Infographic) | Business 2 Community

One of the best ways to understand the future of the Internet is to study its past.

The Internet was built to connect multiple computers so that they could communicate. That is built-in social.

Of course, as more and larger computers were connected, search became a driving force for helping people discover what they were looking for online.

As social networks emerged, social sharing began to affect our methods of information discovery. Now social sharing is the next horizon for web discovery.

In addition to Google search that now favors social content, each of the respective social networks are searchable to a different extent.

So, what?s next? Insights into the future below, but first ?

Check out the infographic from Copyblogger that brings home an essential point about the web ? it was designed from the beginning to be social.

A History of Social Media [Infographic] - Infographic

What comes next that businesses should be planning for now?

The mobile version of all of this will become exceedingly important for future business relevancy.

Just as social sharing adds context to digital content, so too it works for offline sharing as well, with mobile effectively merging the two.

It is obvious that we will all be more globally interconnected in some way. There is no doubt about it.

What does this mean for your business? Many conclude that global connectivity doesn?t matter for them because their business is local.

The fact is greater connectivity by definition must necessarily affect each and every one of us that reside on one planet.

We will have to consider how that will affect our respective businesses.
