Disabled vet says airline left her to sit in own urine

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

A disabled Army veteran claims she was forced to sit in urine-soaked clothing because American Airlines personnel delayed getting her off an airplane at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Wheelchair user Dawn Wilcox told msnbc.com that she was flying from New York to Dallas on Saturday morning on her way home to Killeen, Texas, after attending a friend?s funeral. She said she informed the flight attendants shortly before landing that she needed to be taken off the plane first so that could go to the bathroom.

?They landed and started letting people off,? said Wilcox. ?I said, ?Ma?am, I?m really about to go in my pants.? I was almost in tears. They?d already let three quarters of the people off and it was too late, I?d already wet my pants.?

Wilcox said when she did get into a wheelchair and off the plane, she was told by an airline supervisor that there was an aisle chair onboard and that she could have used the lavatory on the plane. ?But no one told me about that,? said Wilcox. ?It was never offered to me.?

In a statement about the incident, American Airlines said it reached out to Wilcox and apologized to her for her ?discomfort and overall experience with us.? But American Airlines spokesperson Tim Smith said the airline is continuing to look into this event because flight attendants reported a different version of the story.

?Our flight attendant offered an onboard wheelchair to Ms. Wilcox to use to access the lavatory,? said Smith, ?But she declined in favor of her own wheelchair.?

Wilcox said once inside the airport, an airline supervisor offered to let her use a club room shower to clean up. ?But I didn?t have any clothing to change into and they would not give me anything. Instead they wanted to give me a food voucher or a $100 credit to fly another time.?

Eric Lipp, executive director of the Chicago-based Open Doors Organization, an advocacy organization for travelers with disabilities, said onboard aisle chairs are commonly used by travelers with disabilities.

On its website, the Department of Transportation clearly defines the responsibilities of travelers, airlines and?airports to meet the needs of disabled fliers.

Scientists hail brain gene find

The genetic make-up of our brain cells changes thousands of times over the course of our lifetimes, according to new research.

Scientists at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh have identified genes, called retrotransposons, responsible for tiny changes in the DNA of brain tissue.

They say their discovery completely overturns previous theories about how the brain works.

It could also increase understanding of conditions such as Parkinson's disease.

The study shows for the first time that brain cells are genetically different to other cells in the body, and are also genetically distinct from each other.

The research was carried out in collaboration with scientists from the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Japan and the US.

They found that the retrotransposons were particularly active in areas of the brain linked to cell renewal.

Genetic changes

It is hoped that by mapping the location of these genes, scientists could identify mutations that impact on brain function and may cause diseases such as Parkinson's to develop.

The researchers are now investigating whether brain tumour formation and conditions which affect the memory, such as Alzheimer's, are associated with a change in retrotransposon activity.

Dr Geoff Faulkner, from the Roslin Institute, based at the University of Edinburgh, said: "This research completely overturns the belief that the genetic make-up of brain cells remains static throughout life and provides us with new information about how the brain works.

"If we can understand better how these subtle genetic changes occur we could shed light on how brain cells regenerate, how processes like memory formation may have a genetic basis and possibly link the activity of these genes to brain diseases."

The scientists' findings are published in the journal Nature.

Suspect that prompted SC schools lockdown arrested (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Authorities have arrested a gunman who they say prompted a massive manhunt and the lock down of 10 schools after he shot at a police officer.

Investigators say 25-year-old Patrick Dean Lowrance was arrested Friday night at a Greenville apartment. They say he gave up peacefully and was taken to the hospital to treat a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

Authorities say Lowrance drove off in a stolen SUV after a Greenville police tried to pull him over Friday morning. He was later found at an apartment complex and fired shots at an officer before disappearing into the woods.

Officials locked down schools in the area and had dozens of officers and several dog tracking teams search for Lowrance before determining someone picked him up and drove off.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A gunman fired on a South Carolina police officer checking on a suspicious license plate Friday, causing 10 schools in Greenville to go on lockdown.

The schools reopened their doors after a couple of hours and it appears the gunman was able to get someone to pick him up and elude a massive manhunt that went on for hours, authorities said.

Police identified the gunman as and said he was wanted on attempted murder and other charges. They think he might have been wounded when the Greenville officer fired back at him and asked hospitals in the area to be on the lookout in case anyone came in with a gunshot wound.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at an apartment complex, police spokeswoman Alia Urps said.

The suspect was able to run into nearby woods. Several dozen officers who happened to be in a training session nearby rushed to help search, along with teams of tracking dogs authorities said.

The shooting happened after an officer checking license plates in a hotel parking lot found that a plate on a GMC Yukon was listed for a Honda, Urps said. When she went inside the hotel to inquire about the driver, the suspect drove off in the SUV. The officer got into her patrol car and tried to pull the suspect over on Interstate 85, but he sped up, and she abandoned the chase, Urps said.

"We do not pursue for minor traffic infractions, and at that point, that's all that we had," she said.

Another officer found the vehicle in an apartment parking lot, and as she approached the building, the suspect shot at her, she said.

The SUV was stolen in a carjacking three weeks ago in a motel parking lot in Spartanburg, a city about 30 miles east, police said.

Lowrance was wanted on warrants for four counts of attempted murder and other charges after he tried to rob a Wendy's in Greenville last Sunday, authorities said.

Investigators said Lowrance came into the restaurant after closing time and demanded that the three workers inside open the safe. The employees told him only the manager had the combination and she was outside.

The gunman forced the workers outside, where the manager was in her car, trying to drive off. The suspect fired at the car, then demanded that the employees go back inside. But they told him the door locked behind them automatically and Lowrance fired his gun again at them as they ran away. No one was injured, authorities said.

After Friday's shooting, four public schools, three private schools, two colleges and a special education center were placed on lockdown.

Schools were locked down in several directions because officers weren't sure where the suspect went.

"This is not around the corner from a school. I don't want to give you that impression. This is several miles from any of our schools," Oby Lyles, spokesman for Greenville County school district, told The Associated Press. "Everybody's fine."

Officials said it was a precaution, and none of the students or teachers appeared to be in danger. Schools began shifting to a partial lockdown after about two hours and the lockdown was lifted entirely by the time the schools dismissed after police determined the suspect was able to escape in a car.

Investigators have reached out to Lowrance's family for help finding him, but police said they haven't been able to provide much assistance.

PFT: Dolphins sign Losman as backup

125x125ad

On November 1, 2001, I busted a bottle of Boone?s Farm against my Commodore 64, and Profootballtalk.com was born.

There was no mission statement, no business plan, no bucket list.? I had done nine months of unpaid freelance work for the long-defunct NFLtalk.com, which was purchased along with the other Sportstalk.com sites in early 2001 after the tech bubble burst.? I then spent six months working from home for ESPN.com?s subscription-based Insider service, while also practicing law full time.

In October 2001, I was offered a one-year deal with ESPN.com, effective November 1.? (I still have the contract.)? I decided, for a variety of reasons that I won?t bore you with now (but might bore you with later), to launch an independent site (the word blog hadn?t been coined yet, and I have always despised it) that covered the NFL a bit more loosely, with entertainment being as important as information.

PFT launched November 1 of that year, we generated little or no revenue for at least three years, and then the snowball started to roll down the hill, a bit.? The watershed moment came in early 2006, when Ted Moon of Sprint reached out with a desire to explore an advertising relationship.? One thing led to another, we struck a deal, real money was flowing, and I knew at that point that, eventually, I wouldn?t be practicing law at all.

On July 1, 2009, it finally happened, and the two-plus years since then have been an exciting, fulfilling, challenging, and almost entirely enjoyable blur.

I?m not sure what we?ll do to commemorate the 10-year anniversary.? It would be nice if all of PFT Planet shows up next Tuesday and check in, if only to see if the hamsters powering the NBC servers will explode.? Maybe we?ll do something special for PFT Live.? Beyond that, I?m not looking for the day to be ensconced in self-congratulation.? It?s more about reflection and gratitude ? primarily to each of you ? and given the content of this post, the reflection already has started.

Actually, the reflection happens pretty much continuously.? I don?t know how or why this thing has grown, I don?t know how or why 90 percent of the people connected to the NFL read the site (the other 10 percent are lying), and I don?t know where this thing is going and how it will get there.? I?ve been enjoying the ride since Day One, and I?ll keep doing it as long as I can say that.

Hopefully, you?ve enjoyed it, too.? Hopefully, you?ll continue to do that.

If you have any suggestions on how we best should celebrate an unlikely 10-year anniversary, feel free to add them to the comments.? And be sure to check back next Tuesday to see what we do.? And every day between now and then.? And every day after that.? Until I either drop dead or decide to move on, or move out.

Asian shares mixed ahead of Europe plan

(AP) ? Asian shares were mixed Tuesday as investors waited for European leaders to unveil a plan to tackle the continent's ongoing debt crisis.

Markets turned cautious after solid gains in Asia the previous day, unable to extend a Wall Street rally overnight.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average slipped 0.3 percent to 8,820.29 as exporters struggled in the face of a strong yen. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,887.76, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,234.90.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.4 percent to 18,838.06. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand also advanced modestly.

European leaders have said they made progress at a weekend summit and plan to unveil concrete plans for containing the crisis by Wednesday.

The 17-nation eurozone is set to shore up its bailout fund to contain the debt turmoil that threatens to engulf more countries, and German lawmakers said the plan could boost the fund's lending capacity to more than euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion).

Overnight in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average finished with a gain of 104.83 points, or 0.9 percent, at 11,913.62.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to 1,254.19, marking the highest close for the S&P 500 since Aug. 3, just as Washington was resolving a showdown over raising the country's borrowing limit.

In currencies, the dollar rose slightly to 76.14 yen from 76.05 yen late Monday in New York. The euro stood at $1.3905 from $1.3951.

US government seeks $70M from African official (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The U.S. government is seeking to recover more than $70 million from the son of Equatorial Guinea's president over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

Two complaints, filed Tuesday in Washington and unsealed in Los Angeles, say Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, a government minister in the Western African country, used his position to profit through money laundering and corruption.

U.S. authorities believe Nguema, son of Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, amassed more than $100 million and spent $30 million on a Malibu mansion, $38.5 million on a Gulfstream jet and nearly $2 million in Michael Jackson memorabilia.

"We are sending the message loud and clear: the United States will not be a hiding place for the ill-gotten riches of the world's corrupt leaders," said Assistant U.S. Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

Despite a government salary of less than $100,000 a year, Nguema was able to pilfer millions of dollars from the extraction and sale of his country's natural resources, authorities said. His family is accused of tapping Equatorial Guinea's oil wealth.

An email message left for Purificacion Angue Ondo, Equatorial Guinea's ambassador to the U.S., was not immediately returned.

Among the other items purchased by Nguema, according to federal officials, was a 2011 Ferrari automobile valued at more than $530,000.

The U.S. government said it will attempt to recover the stolen funds for "the benefit of the people of the country from which it was taken."

City Center to reopen after $56 million spruce-up (AP)

NEW YORK ? For one of the oldest major performing arts venues in New York ? one that's hosted many of the world's premier artists for nearly 70 years ? City Center seems to have had something of a self-esteem problem.

It seated over 2,700 people in its main theater, but many of those seats were uncomfortable, the sightlines less than desirable. The lobby felt small and crowded. The beautiful vaulted ceiling in the upstairs lobby was dulled with layers of wear and dust.

The distinctive neo-Moorish facade, a city landmark, was barely visible from the street because of dark green awnings in front of it. And you couldn't see the building, located on West 55th Street, from either nearby corner.

In short, though it's only a block from the more famous Carnegie Hall, likely no one ever joked, "How do you get to City Center?" (Practice, practice, practice.)

But all this is changing.

New York City Center, proudly inaugurated by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in 1943, is being reintroduced this week following a renovation to the tune of $56 million. Old layers of paint have been scraped away with razor blades, original color schemes restored. Seats have been ripped out, replaced with plusher, wider models. Better sloping has improved sightlines.

Outside, those nondescript green awnings have been removed, replaced by a marquee that shows off the sandstone facade. And ? hello, self-esteem! ? illuminated signs are now visible from Sixth and Seventh avenues in Midtown Manhattan.

"This place has been around a long time, and was truly getting a little dreary," its president and CEO, Arlene Shuler, said in an interview last week as workers around her applied the finishing touches. "People would come here for performances, but not know they were coming to City Center. We felt it was very important to be more competitive in this environment."

The building known now as City Center actually began as a home to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, otherwise known as the Shriners. "They'd been using Carnegie Hall as their meeting house, but Carnegie Hall didn't like all the cigar smoke. So they built their own place a block away," said Duncan Hazard, the chief architect on the job.

In 1943, though, the Shriners could no longer keep it and the building was headed for demolition, until LaGuardia and the city council took it over and turned it into an arts center. (It's still owned by the city, which was the major donor to the capital campaign that paid for the renovation.) At the opening, LaGuardia himself took the baton to conduct the New York Philharmonic in the national anthem. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is scheduled to conduct, as well, at a star-studded reopening Tuesday.

City Center was a major home for New York culture for decades ? early on, as an alternative to Broadway theater, and the original home of New York City Ballet and New York City Opera. When those companies later moved to the newly built Lincoln Center, it became underused. It was refocused as a major dance center, and today is home to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater ? which recently signed a new 10-year deal ? and to American Ballet Theatre's fall season. It brings in countless visiting troupes, from the Kirov to flamenco performers to tango groups.

It also hosts the extremely popular Fall for Dance Festival, a 10-day smorgasbord of global dance that sold out in five hours this year (it begins later this week) and the equally popular Encores! musical theater series. In a smaller theater, it houses the Manhattan Theater Club.

One recent loss was the Paul Taylor Dance Company, which recently announced a move to Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater, newly vacated by New York City Opera.

Shuler hopes they will return, and that the renovation will draw others, of course. Leading a reporter around the new digs, she and Hazard began on the stage ? now refitted with a sprung floor, kinder to dancers' feet. Out in the audience, a worker in a cherry-picker was cleaning the domed ceiling with what looked like a giant mop.

"Over a few unfortunate restorations, the color had become an unappealing gray-white," Hazard said of the theater's Moorish-style ceiling and walls. "We did some archaeology of the paint finishes, and found out the original 1923 color scheme." Now, there are vivid blues and greens.

There's also a spiffy new lighting booth. But the first challenge was to improve those sightlines. Undesirable seats were ripped out, bringing the seat count down to 2,250 from over 2,700. Rows were also resloped, adding to better visibility, and staggered. Seats were widened, too, with better cushioning for the derriere.

The renovation, which was completed over two summers to minimize disruption, also focused on the inner and outer lobbies. Patrons now enter from the sides of the auditorium, creating more lobby space and improving audience flow.

The outer lobby now has a bar, and paned glass doors so one can see in from the street. And for all the faithful reconstruction, a contemporary touch has found its way in: Large video monitors in the inner lobby, which will host three video installations per year.

There are added elevators, and even the restrooms have been redone with an eye to Moorish style. (And cast and crew now have their own restroom on stage level, something they were lacking.)

Shuler and Hazard seemed especially proud of the Grand Tier lobby, a level up from the orchestra, with its colorfully painted vaulted ceiling and the desert-themed murals on the walls.

Restoring the ceiling, workers with razor blades scraped off layers of paint and shellac for four to five months. "It was a real labor of love," said Shuler.

On the other hand, the upstairs lobby floor had been buffed with so much love last week that it was dangerously slippery underfoot. That will be adjusted, Shuler said.

Back in the theater, sitting in the best Grand Tier seats, Shuler said she believed they were the best seats in the city, bar none ? they hang over row H, bringing one close to the stage, yet above it.

Hopefully, she said, more people will know about them now.

"We think people are going to be aware now that they're coming to City Center," Shuler said.

Seasonal rite goes wrong as hayride wagon overturns (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? An Ohio hayride operator faced drunk-driving charges on Sunday after the farm tractor he was driving veered off the road and flipped one of the wagons it was towing, injuring 28 passengers, two of them seriously.

The Ohio State Police said Michael Hermes, 47, was pulling between 60 and 80 people in two straw-filled wagons late Saturday night when he drove off the right side of a road near Sandusky, causing the rear wagon to overturn.

Most of the injured were transported to local hospitals. But two were evacuated by helicopter to a medical center in Toledo, 60 miles away.

Hermes, who was not injured in the crash, refused to take a field sobriety test, the state police said. He was arrested and booked into the Erie County Jail.

He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, aggravated vehicular assault, open container and failure to control, the state police said. He was scheduled to appear in Sandusky Municipal Court on Tuesday.

Officials did not release the identities of any of the injured passengers. An official at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo would not disclose the condition of the two patients flown there.

Manchester United: Fergie plays down finance factor - ClubCall.com

Sir Alex Ferguson feels Manchester United are the top team in English football despite the financial muscle of rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils chief has spoken out ahead of Sunday's eagerly-awaited derby clash at Old Trafford with his side sitting two points beneath City, who are proudly top of the Premier League.
Ferguson is aware that City boss Roberto Mancini has had vast amounts of money to spend from the club's Abu Dhabi owners which has seen him bring in a wealth of star players such as Sergio Aguero.
However, the veteran Scot insists that his reigning champions remain the top dogs in England regardless of how much money City have at their disposal.
"We are ahead of the game," Ferguson told the Daily Mail. "We have a wonderful training ground. We have a good youth set-up, we don't need to touch that.
"We do well in terms of scouting abroad, getting young players in like Javier Hernandez.
"Money can always make things better, of course, but I don't look at money as an important issue for us at the moment.
"If I need a player, the Glazers have been great, they have always provided the money and they will continue to do so.
"But the difference between us and City is that we have built over a long period, there is a structure. City have had to do it in a quick spell.
"When the Abu Dhabi people took over, they were looking for instant results which they are getting."

(AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File)

(AP) ? In Florida, where Cuba and Fidel Castro can be highly combustible political issues, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is defending himself against allegations he embellished his family's story in saying his parents left the island after Castro came to power.

So far, prominent members of the Cuban American community are standing by him, including the head of one of Miami's oldest and most respected exile groups, who said Friday that he is willing to give the rising GOP star and tea-party favorite a pass.

The 40-year-old freshman senator has always publicly identified with the exile community and has a strong following within it. Rubio's biography on his Senate website says he was "born in Miami to Cuban-born parents who come to America following Fidel Castro's takeover." And in a campaign ad last year, he said: "As the son of exiles, I understand what it means to lose the gift of freedom."

But The Washington Post reported that Rubio's parents actually left Cuba in 1956, nearly three years before Castro seized power in a revolution against dictator Fulgencia Batista. Rubio's father was a store security guard when he and his wife left, according to Rubio's staff, and came to the U.S. for economic reasons.

Rubio responded to the story with a statement saying his parents had tried to return to Cuba in March 1961 but quickly left because they did not want to live under communism.

"After arriving in the United States, they had always hoped to one day return to Cuba if things improved and traveled there several times," he said. "In 1961, my mother and older siblings did in fact return to Cuba while my father stayed behind wrapping up the family's matters in the U.S. After just a few weeks living there, she fully realized the true nature of the direction Castro was taking Cuba and returned to the United States one month later, never to return."

In addition, Rubio has said publicly on previous occasions that his parents left Cuba before the revolution.

Rubio's staff said it would change his Senate website.

The issue is magnified because of the formidable political clout of the Cuban exile community in Florida and the fierce passions in Miami that still surround Castro and the communist island, and because Rubio is often mentioned as a potential vice presidential pick. Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich have said he would make a great running mate.

Democrats are trying to make an issue of it, saying it calls into question Rubio's character. The Florida Democratic Party accused Rubio of "self-serving deception," and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said Rubio has a credibility problem.

"The latest bombshell confirms that Rubio seriously struggles to tell the truth and can't be trusted," said DSCC spokesman Matt Canter.

But Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the GOP National Committee, said the attacks will only strengthen Rubio by causing Republicans to come to his defense. The conservative was elected in 2010 after an upset over the GOP establishment's choice, Gov. Charlie Crist.

"There's no question he has an amazing life story. His family came here to pursue a better life, and that is all accurate. There's folks out there who have seen a great success story and are plotting to figure out how to take him down," Spicer said.

The head of the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation, Pepe Hernandez, himself an exile and longtime opponent of Castro, said Rubio's parents' initial departure date was unimportant.

"There were a number of people who came here during the Batista regime because they were against Batista somehow," he said. "Then they returned to Cuba when Castro came in because they thought now things were going to change, and then after some time they realized this was not going to happen."

"Maybe their case is not exactly the same. They really came here as immigrants, but the second time the reason was that they couldn't live in Cuba under those circumstances. I don't see any difference between his parents and myself and everyone else who came here."

Former Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., who left Cuba as a teenager after the revolution, said the Post story showed "a gross lack of understanding about the Cuban exile experience. The fact is that they would not have left Cuba permanently if not for extreme fear of persecution and in search of freedom, like so many of us did."

Fernand Amandi, a pollster whose company specializes in Hispanic public opinion and works more often with Democrats than Republicans, said the episode alone might not be that damaging, but it could invite further scrutiny of Rubio's record.

"It's a chink in his armor of what was somebody who up to this point had almost uniformly positive and favorable coverage," he said.

Liverpool owner says no truth to relegation report

By JIMMY GOLEN

updated 1:50 a.m. ET Oct. 21, 2011

BOSTON - Liverpool owner John Henry, who also owns baseball's Boston Red Sox, denied on Thursday that foreign owners in the English Premier League want to end the relegation and promotion system.

Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the League Managers' Association, said this week that some of the American and Asian owners of Premier League teams have been talking about scrapping the system that sends the bottom three teams to the second-tier League Championship.

But Henry called that "complete nonsense," telling The Associated Press it "hasn't been discussed."

Half of the Premier League's 20 teams are foreign-owned. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester United and Sunderland are owned by Americans, while Blackburn is under Indian ownership and Queens Park Rangers has Malaysian backers.

American sports leagues don't follow the European model that relegates the bottom teams in the standings and promotes the top teams from the minor leagues. Bevan warned that, if more teams are sold to overseas investors, they could force a change in the longstanding rules.

"There are a number of overseas-owned clubs already talking about bringing about the avoidance of promotion and relegation in the Premier League," Bevan said at the Professional Players Federation conference in London. "If we have four or five more new owners, that could happen."

A change would require support from 14 of the league's 20 clubs and approval by The Football Association; league rules state the FA's consent is needed for "the making and adoption of or any amendment to ... promotion to and relegation from the league." It would also meet opposition from Europe's soccer and political institutions.

Other American-owned teams have also dismissed Bevan's claims.

United manager Alex Ferguson, whose club is owned by American Malcom Glazer and his family, said eliminating relegation "would be absolute suicide for the rest of the teams in the country, particularly the Championship." The Villa board headed by American Randy Lerner, who also owns NFL's Cleveland Browns, was "confused and surprised" by Bevan's remarks.

But Bevan said "particularly American owners without doubt" have been looking at a system without relegation.

Dance Your Ph.D.: When Science People Shake A Tail Feather, Everybody Wins

UPDATE: The grand prize winner is Joel Miller, for his "Microstructure-Property relationships in Ti2448 components produced by Selective Laser Melting: A Love Story." See that and the other winners here.

Every now and then, you learn about something so amazing that you're instantly (1) cheered that you know about it now, and (2) sad for yourself that you never knew about it before.

That's how I felt when Andrew Prince at NPR's science desk told me about Dance Your Ph.D., a contest in which people who work in the sciences ? physics, chemistry, biology and social science ? create videos of dance interpretations of their Ph.D. theses, and they compete for a $1,000 prize. (NPR covered the contest back in 2008; I was somehow in bed at the time.)

Now, the risk, naturally, is that this will just become a contest to make the most slickly produced music video, so they have a rule. As stated in the FAQ, "The author of the Ph.D. thesis has to be one of the dancers." So there's no hiring all your hot friends to do the dancing while you do the thinking. No no! This is Dance YOUR Ph.D., not Dance Your Less Coordinated Friend's Ph.D.

This year's winner is being announced today in Brussels (where else would you do it?). You can watch the finalists here, including this man-teaches-robot-to-dance video that utterly delighted me. The technical title is "Human-Based Percussion and Self-Similarity Detection in Electroacoustic Music." You can probably tell that from the dancing, though.

Then there's this one. I don't understand it, but I like it. "The Effect Of Western-Style Diet Consumption On Epigenetic Patterns." (So don't steal that title for YOUR YouTube video.)

Later this afternoon, we'll be back with an update on the winner. But let's face it: these people are all winners already, and I mean that with nothing but sincerity.

Disposable items you can dispose of for good (Y! Green)

By Steve Graham, Hometalk

It may seem hard to get through a day without generating trash or even recyclable waste. The easiest ways to buy products, clean surfaces and perform other tasks often involve disposable items. However, you can often reduce your environmental impact and save money by replacing standard disposable items with reusable alternatives.

Even if you buy disposable items made with recycled and recyclable materials, they require energy and materials to create. Moreover, they require more energy to recycle. If disposable items end up in landfills, they might take months or years to decompose.

Here are 12 categories of disposable products that can easily be replaced with reusable products.

1. Beverage bottles: Disposable plastic water bottles are one of the great demons of the environmental movement, sending unnecessary plastic into the landfill. A variety of reusable metal and plastic alternatives are widely available. They are typically more expensive than a bottle of Evian, but they are infinitely refillable, saving plenty of money in the long run. Also consider reusable bottles and cups for soda and other beverages.

Milk containers pose other environmental problems. While plastic jugs are typically recyclable, they often end up in the landfill, where they may take hundreds of years to decompose. However, old-fashioned milk delivery in reusable glass bottles is becoming popular again. Also, more vendors, particularly natural foods grocers, are offering milk in reusable glass or plastic bottles.

To be sure, production and transportation of glass bottles is quite energy-intensive. However, reusing the glass and getting milk from local dairies significantly reduces the environmental impact.

2. Plastic bags: Disposable plastic grocery bags, though convenient, are another environmental scourge. An estimated 60,000 plastic bags are used every five seconds in the U.S. However, it seems that with each passing month, more shoppers at local grocery stores are bringing reusable bags made of cloth, canvas or other materials.

Smaller disposable plastic produce bags can also be replaced with cloth bags. Consider getting some used pillowcases at thrift stores, or sew small cloth sacks, and take them to the store along with your reusable shopping bags. Also look for bulk bins, and bring your own containers for grains, snacks, cereals and other foods. Instead of getting cereal in a disposable waxed paper bag within a disposable cardboard box, just put it in your own container.

You can even pour cereal or other foods into your own glass jars for home storage. Just be sure to measure and mark the tare, or empty, container weight.

3. Takeout containers: Even if you get reusable containers and bags to clean up your act at the grocery store, you may still get plenty of disposable materials when you eat out. Fast food outlets and other restaurants that use plastic cutlery and containers generate plenty of waste. But you can help reduce the waste stream by carrying your own metal or bamboo utensil sets, and bringing reusable food containers.

Some restaurants may bar such containers for fear of cross-contamination. However, others encourage reusable containers and recognize the financial and environmental benefits. At the very least, they can?t stop you from putting leftovers in your own container instead of their disposable plastic or Styrofoam boxes.

4. Coffee cups and filters: Many of us can?t do without our daily coffee, but we can enjoy it without disposable cups and filters. Carry a reusable mug in your car for coffee on the go, and keep one at the office for workplace coffee. Many coffee shops even offer a discount for java junkies who bring their own cup.

For making coffee at home, consider replacing disposable paper filters with permanent filters made with stainless steel or other products. Also consider replacing disposable single-serving packages of coffee grounds with bulk coffee in reusable containers.

5. Toiletries: Next, it?s time to brush away the coffee breath. While a partly disposable toothbrush is essentially unavoidable, you can reduce 93 percent of toothbrush waste by replacing the head on these reusable toothbrush handles.

Likewise, disposable razors can be replaced with less wasteful (albeit more expensive) razors with permanent handles and small disposable heads, which last longer than many disposable alternatives. Other less wasteful alternatives include straight razors and electric razors. Of course, the latter require energy for charging, but they don?t require hot water or shaving foam.

6. Baby diapers and wipes: In 2006, American babies wore 3.6 millions tons of disposable diapers, generating 2 percent of all municipal waste, in the form of stinky plastic balls that might take centuries to decompose.

However, the reusable cloth alternative is making a comeback. Cloth diapers can either be washed at home or cleaned through a diaper service.

Stacks of studies in recent years have compared the environmental impacts of disposable and cloth diapers. While some studies show that more water and electricity is used in laundering cloth diapers than in producing an equivalent number of disposable diapers. However, it is undeniable that disposable diapers generate more waste. Moreover, cloth diaper users can reduce energy usage by line-drying diapers.

Reusable baby wipes and nursing pads are also widely available.

7. Feminine products: Women in the United States throw out an estimated 12 billion sanitary pads and 7 billions tampons every year. There are several reusable alternatives, including menstrual cups and washable cloth pads.

8. Toilet paper: This may be the toughest sell on the list, but washable cloth wipes can replace standard toilet paper. Another option, although it is a big-ticket item, is to switch to a bidet.

9. Newspapers and magazines: By some measures, newspapers and magazines are the only single source of trash larger than diapers. As a magazine contributor and former newspaper editor, it pains me to admit that reusable alternatives can replace physically delivered newspapers and magazines. Computers and e-readers offer low-waste options for reading the news, and many laptops and e-readers use relatively little energy.

10. Cleaning products: Replace paper towels and other cleaning products with reusable alternatives. For example, Skoy uses cotton and cellulose to make quick-drying, absorbent cloths that can replace both paper towels and sponges for many cleaning jobs.

Swiffer mops are also very popular, but are essentially disposable and quite wasteful. Reusable microfiber cloths do the same job with less waste. Standard disposable sponges can also be replaced with natural cellulose sponges, which can be disinfected in the microwave. These natural cellulose sponges also have other environmental advantages. They are not packaged with embedded chemical disinfectants, like most disposable sponges.

11. Batteries: As a new parent, I am starting to realize that children can generate a steady stream of used batteries, which should only be tossed out in certain locations. Avoid the hassle and the waste by using rechargeable batteries and a home charger.

Check for compatibility before using rechargeable batteries in certain devices. There are several types of batteries, and some devices work better with specific types. Also seek out high-quality rechargeable batteries, as their charge levels and longevity are worth the extra cost. The Sanyo Eneloop may cost more than $3 each, but they come pre-charged and can be recharged up to 1,500 times, and they are widely considered the best rechargeable batteries on the market.

12. Pens and ink cartridges: Disposable plastic pens may be everywhere, but you may be able to write better and generate less waste with a refillable pen. If you let your printer do most of your writing, switch to refillable cartridges. Many companies remanufacture and refill ink cartridges. These professional refills are generally considered a better option than home refill kits, which can be messy and ineffective.

In rare miss, Apple 4Q earnings disappoint (AP)

NEW YORK ? Apple, the juggernaut of consumer electronics, stumbled in its latest quarter, as the later-than-usual launch of the new iPhone held back sales.

On Tuesday, Apple reported earnings and revenue that came in below analyst expectations, sending its stock down 7 percent.

It was a rare miss for the seemingly unstoppable company and an inauspicious start for new CEO Tim Cook. But he promised that sales would come roaring back in the current quarter, when the iPhone 4S went on sale. Even in the just-ended quarter, earnings and revenue grew at rates that would be the envy of any large company.

Investors and analysts had expected the new phone to arrive in September, but Apple held off until Friday, delaying the sales surge into the new quarter.

Even so, iPhone sales were up 21 percent from last year at 17.1 million, a remarkable achievement considering that the flagship model at the time, the iPhone 4, was more than a year old. Analysts, however, were hoping for 20 million.

Michael Walkley, an analyst for Canaccord Genuity, said the sales shortfall was all because of the timing of the iPhone 4S. He said Apple will make up for it in the next few months.

"The growth story hasn't changed," he said.

Net income in the fiscal fourth quarter was $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per share. That was up 54 percent from $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per share, a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $7.28 per share.

Revenue was $28.3 billion, up 39 percent. Even though it wasn't an all-time record, it was the highest for the July-to-September quarter. Analysts were expecting $29.4 billion.

Laptops were Apple's strongest category in the quarter, with sales up 30 percent from the previous quarter thanks to the release of a new operating system, Lion. Total Mac sales set an all-time record at 4.9 million. Apple's figures are bucking the trend for the PC market in general, which is seeing anemic growth.

Apple's said it expects earnings of $9.30 per share and revenue of $37 billion. Apple usually low-balls its forecasts, and analyst figures are usually higher. But in this case, analysts had lower figures, expecting earnings of $9 per share and revenue of $36.7 billion.

In the full fiscal year, Apple earned $25.9 billion, or $27.68 per share. That was up 85 percent from the previous year. Revenue was $108 billion, up 66 percent.

Apple's stock fell $28.26, or 6.7 percent, to $393.98 in afterhours trading following the release of results. That wiped out one week of gains. At the close of regular trading, it was the world's most valuable company, but the stock drop means it's yielding the position to Exxon Mobil Corp.

Steve Jobs relinquished his position as CEO in August, after going on medical leave in January. He died Oct. 5 after years of battling pancreatic cancer. Apple will close its stores for several hours Wednesday so employees can watch a webcast of a Jobs memorial service at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity and was not authorized to speak publicly.

New CEO Cook told analysts on a conference call that China continues to be the fastest-growing market for the company. In the latest quarter, sales were up nearly four times from last year and made up one-sixth of Apple's overall sales.

"It's an area of enormous opportunity. ... The sky's the limit in there," Cook said.

On Monday, Apple said it had sold more than 4 million units of the new iPhone 4S in the first three days. That's more than twice the number it sold in the three days after the launch of the earlier model last year.

"In our wildest dreams we couldn't have gotten off to a start as great as we have on the 4S," Cook said.

Holiday sales of Macs are threatened by massive flooding in Thailand, which has knocked out several factories that make hard disk drives.

"I'm virtually certain there will be an overall industry shortage of disk drives as a result of the disaster. How it affects Apple I'm not sure," Cook said.

Blatter prepares to unveil FIFA reform plan

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:04 p.m. ET Oct. 19, 2011

ZURICH (AP) -Sepp Blatter is preparing to deliver long-awaited reforms to try to repair football's battered reputation, and the FIFA president may start by finally naming the senior officials accused of taking kickbacks in the 1990s.

Blatter promised zero tolerance of corruption after winning a fourth and final four-year term in June in an election that was rocked by the worst bribery scandal in the governing body's history.

That scandal in the Caribbean, which Blatter was accused of helping orchestrate to ensure victory, removed continental presidents Mohamed bin Hammam and Jack Warner from FIFA's high command, and added to allegations of vote-rigging, secret payments, ticket scams and unethical favors that have long shrouded FIFA.

Now, the case of FIFA's former marketing agency which collapsed in 2001 has come under renewed scrutiny in Switzerland and Brazil. The issue threatens to cast harsh light on Blatter's predecessor, Joao Havelange; the head of Brazil's 2014 World Cup organizers, Ricardo Teixeira; and two more continental bosses, Nicolas Leoz and Issa Hayatou.

Blatter will present his plans at a two-day executive committee meeting starting Thursday, which will also weigh whether to reveal which football officials received millions of dollars in kickbacks from the ISL agency.

FIFA is currently stopping a Swiss court from releasing documents which confirm who took payments, but that legal battle has been complicated by Brazilian investigators seeking details as they probe Teixeira over possible money-laundering offenses.

Blatter's challenge to lead FIFA toward a more credible future therefore involves confronting an often murky past.

Still, 208 football nations entrusted him with the clean-up task, after having had effective executive control of FIFA for 30 years in which its wealth, political influence and notoriety has surged.

"I am the captain of the ship," Blatter told his Congress in June, pledging to put FIFA "back on the right course in clear transparent waters."

FIFA has sought help from Transparency International, a global watchdog which advises governments and corporations how to lead honestly.

"I am very optimistic," TI's sports adviser Sylvia Schenk told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I think there will be some good proposals and we will see what those proposals are on Friday."

In August, TI presented a wish-list of reforms and asked FIFA to order independent probes of past allegations to overcome a "crisis of trust." Topping the list was ISL, which could yet define Blatter's presidential era.

FIFA "could help to end, or at least accelerate," the release of court documents, the report said.

Although commercial bribery was not a crime in Switzerland during ISL's time, six agency staff stood trial in 2008 for financial misdeeds and Paraguayan Leoz was named in court.

Two senior football officials repaid kickbacks worth 5.5 million Swiss francs ($7 million) last year but FIFA has blocked a court in Zug from identifying them.

British broadcaster the BBC has reported that the documents name Havelange and his former son-in-law Teixeira.

Africa's football president Hayatou, of Cameroon, also was identified as taking ISL payments, which he said were for his confederation. Havelange and Hayatou, both IOC members, are being investigated by the Olympic body's ethics commission using BBC evidence.

Schenk's team wants FIFA to improve democracy by including all football's stakeholders - clubs, leagues, players, match officials, fans, sponsors and media - in making decisions.

TI believes FIFA should modernize how it investigates wrongdoing, with a revamped ethics committee given independence to launch and prosecute cases.

Financial transparency should include clearer annual reports that detail salaries and bonuses, which should be set by an independent panel, the reform report said.

FIFA also should open big decisions on awarding World Cup hosting rights and broadcast deals to more external scrutiny, TI suggested.

Yet Blatter's mandate in June included a request from his members, who saw their FIFA funding increase on his 13-year watch, to find solutions within the family.

The willingness of 75-year-old Blatter to reshape the organization he has served for almost half his life, and his own legacy, will be tested Friday.

Mexican drug cartels recruiting Texas children

Texas law enforcement officials say several Mexican drug cartels are luring youngsters as young as 11 to work in their smuggling operations.

Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told Reuters the drug gangs have a chilling name for the young Texans lured into their operations.

"They call them 'the expendables,'" he said.

McCraw said his investigators have evidence six Mexican drug gangs -- including the violent Zetas -- have "command and control centers" in Texas actively recruiting children for their operations, attracting them with what appears to be "easy money" for doing simple tasks.

"Cartels would pay kids $50 just for them to move a vehicle from one position to another position, which allows the cartel to keep it under surveillance to see if law enforcement has it under surveillance," he said.

"Of course, once you're hooked up with them, there's consequences."

McCraw said 25 minors have been arrested in one Texas border county alone in the past year for running drugs, acting as lookouts, or doing other work for organized Mexican drug gangs. The cartels are now fanning out, he said, and have operations in all major Texas cities.

This month, "we made an arrest of a 12-year-old boy who was in a stolen pickup truck with 800 pounds of marijuana," he said. "So they do recruit our kids."

McCraw says the state of Texas is joining a program initiated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection called "Operation Detour," in which law enforcement officers meet with children and their parents in schools and at community centers to warn them about the dangers of what appears to be the easy money the Mexican drug gangs offer.

Law enforcement officers say children are less likely to be suspects than adults, are easily manipulated by relatively small sums of money, and face less severe penalties than adults if arrested.

Last month, Texas officials released a report indicating Mexico-based drug gangs are intent on creating a "sanitary zone" on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, and are "intimidating landowners" in south Texas into allowing them to use their property as "permanent bases" for drug smuggling activity.

Greece braces for shutdown as austerity vote nears (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greek ships were harbored and trains halted on Tuesday as angry workers built momentum for "the mother of all strikes" expected to bring the entire country to a halt in protest against a new package of tax hikes and wage cuts.

Unions representing around half of Greece's 4 million-strong workforce have called a 48 hour general strike for Wednesday and Thursday to protest against a sweeping package of austerity measures due to be passed in parliament this week.

A wave of individual strikes over recent days by groups ranging from garbage collectors to tax officials, journalists and seamen has given a foretaste of this week's protest which will culminate in mass demonstrations in front of parliament.

The protest, dubbed "the mother of all strikes" by the daily Ta Nea newspaper, is expected to be the biggest since the financial crisis began two years ago, shutting state offices, shops and even providers of everyday staples like bakers.

Prime Minister George Papandreou, battling to satisfy demands from international lenders for tough action, has appealed for unity, saying the package must pass to allow Greece to emerge from the crisis.

"The nation is at a crucial moment and we have to be united. In this battle, we need everyone," Papandreou told a cabinet meeting late on Monday. "Everyone must assume their responsibilities."

"Our main goal is to end the uncertainty over the country's future. Because this uncertainty undermines our efforts and sacrifices," he said.

Late on Monday, the government suffered a symbolic blow when PASOK lawmaker Thomas Robopoulos resigned in protest, although parliamentary rules allow him to be replaced by another member of the ruling party, leaving its 4-seat majority intact.

Two other PASOK deputies have also threatened to vote against part of the package but, with one of the smaller opposition parties possibly offering support, the package is still expected to pass.

RECESSION

The bill due to be passed on Wednesday or Thursday includes tax hikes, wage cuts, public sector layoffs and changes to collective bargaining rules. It follows a series of painful austerity measures that have already roused bitter resentment.

Trapped in deep recession for the past three years, Greece is still choking on a public debt that amounts to around 162 percent of gross domestic product, despite repeated doses of austerity which risk crushing any growth prospects.

The economy is forecast to contract 5.5 percent in 2011 and 2.5 percent next year.

However European partners and the International Monetary Fund, which have been providing the funds needed to keep Athens afloat have pressed for more action, complaining that Greece has been falling behind its budget targets.

Parliament is due to open a three-day debate later on Tuesday, after Papandreou meets members of the ruling PASOK parliamentary group to rally support.

He wants a convincing show of support for the measures in time for an EU summit on October 23, when a new bailout deal is expected to be outlined. He is due to meet conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras in a bid to present a united front in Brussels.

Government officials have dismissed rumors that Papandreou might renew an offer for a coalition government, which Samaras turned down in the summer.

GOP showcasing Hispanic stars (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are popular, relative political newcomers in presidential battleground states.

The rising GOP stars are also Hispanics, something the Republican Party makes no secret of hoping to capitalize on in the upcoming national elections.

National Republicans are inviting them on international fact finding trips, courting them for high-profile public appearances and whispering their names as possibilities for vice presidential nominations.

"They represent the American Dream," said Fred Malek, founder of the conservative American Action Network and its spinoff, the Hispanic Leadership Network, whose mission is to bring Hispanics into the party. "They represent what America is all about how to succeed. How to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, reach success and show leadership. They all share that."

But wooing the Hispanic vote takes more than floating candidates with Latino names, as was obvious last month when the Hispanic Leadership Network held a conference here. Martinez, after delivering the keynote dinner speech, was heckled by a group of some 50 young Latinos upset by her aggressive attempts to repeal a law that lets illegal immigrants get state driver's licenses.

"Stop the Hate," the protesters yelled while a table of conference attendees stood up and began chanting "USA, USA."

The scene underscores the complexities both political parties face as they set their sights on the nation's biggest and fastest growing but traditionally Democratic-leaning minority group ? which is as diverse as Martinez, Sandoval and Rubio and the swing states they represent. Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles, a group that tends to have widely different views on immigration than Mexican-Americans in the Southwest and border-state Hispanics who trace their roots to early Spanish settlers.

"It's just as dangerous to stereotype a Latino or a Latina voter as it is to assume that all white voters think and act the same way," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP strategist who now teaches at University of Southern California.

While having a Hispanic on a Republican ballot will never sway hard core Democrats and many traditionally liberal leaning groups, Schnur says it may cause some voters to give the GOP a second look.

And the Republican Party sees an opportunity to lure more moderate and conservative Hispanics with pro-family, pro-jobs, strong work ethic themes that appeal to immigrants.

"Here is the new frontier of immigrants," Malek said. "The people who came to this country for the same reason my grandparents came to this country at the turn of the last century -- to make their way and build their future."

Martinez is the granddaughter of illegal Mexican immigrants and a long-time southern New Mexico prosecutor who has alienated immigrant rights groups with her stance on the driver's license issue. She represents a state that is nearly 50 percent Hispanic, and one that tends to be more tolerant of Mexican immigrants ? legal or illegal ? than neighbors like Arizona. And while Martinez is the nation's first Latina governor, Hispanic politicians are far from a novelty here.

Sandoval, a former state attorney general and federal judge who took office the same time as Martinez, has focused less on his heritage and has largely avoided hot-button issues like immigration. He has also been more welcoming of the national spotlight.

He traveled at the invitation of the Pentagon to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, and met with governors in Utah, California, Tennessee and Kentucky to discuss foreign, environmental and economic policy.

Sandoval will be introduced to conservative voters outside Nevada next week when he'll help open a GOP presidential debate and political summit in Las Vegas.

"I want to lead by example and show the people of the party that it's important to me as well as to the state to elect Republican candidates," Sandoval told The Associated Press.

But when it comes to Hispanics, Marco Rauda, a Hispanic Democratic organizer in Las Vegas, said many Latinos in Nevada don't know what to make of Sandoval. He hasn't appointed Hispanics to his administration in notable numbers and his interactions with the community have largely been limited to formal galas and luncheons with Hispanic businessmen.

Rubio, 40, became the youngest Floridian to serve as State House Speaker in 1996. He speaks rapidly and without notes, easily bringing tears to his audiences' eyes with recollections of his immigrant parents' struggles and his appreciation for the country that took them in.

"My dad was 30-something when he came to this country and had to start his life brand new. So my generation in many ways inherited a lot of dreams and hopes," he has said.

Rubio says he is not interested in the vice presidential nomination, though his name topped Michigan's straw poll last month for the post. Fueling further speculation about his ambitions are the numerous Rubio staffers ? including his chief of staff and communications director ? who worked for Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential campaign

Despite his roots, he has largely dodged taking a public stand on tough immigration issues, refusing recently to be interviewed about immigration by the nation's largest Spanish-language network, Univision, whose audience tends to strongly support immigration reform,

While Republicans are frank about their hope these three can bring more Hispanics into the GOP fold, the real benefits go way beyond the upcoming presidential elections, Schnur said

Democrats are skeptical that Latino voters will be swayed.

"Latinos do not vote surnames," Democratic strategist Maria Cardona said, noting that neither Martinez nor Sandoval won the majority Hispanic vote in their own states. "They vote according to policies and they know very well that Sandoval, Martinez and Rubio do not represent the best interests of the overall Latino population in terms of giving them the tools to prosper in this tough economy."
