Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is up for re-election in the fall of 2012. The Hill reports GOP businessman John Brunner will make an official announcement Oct. 3 as to his intention to run for the U.S. Senate against the incumbent.

Brunner has to get past a primary election first. Former state treasurer Sarah Steelman announced her candidacy last December. Several of Missouri's representatives to Congress are also considering runs against McCaskill who will run unopposed in Democratic primaries. The only one who has come forward with an official campaign is Rep. Todd Akin .

Brunner is based in St. Louis. He hired GOP publicist John Hancock to help with his possible campaign. The Columbia Missourian reported Brunner had been considering a run since April 2011.

Brunner has been involved in the health and beauty supply business since 1978. Vi-Jon has been around over 100 years and is creates private health and beauty care products. Brunner is the third generation of his family to be involved in the business.

What will make the addition of a private businessman into the race will be campaign finances. Companies can donate unlimited amounts of money to political campaigns. Brunner can also put some of his own fortune into a war chest against his primary opponents and then McCaskill.

The 2012 Missouri general election for Senate won't be about Republican versus Democrat if Brunner is the opponent. The election will be about who has the most campaign cash as is many modern elections. Any other candidates are lifelong politicians and don't have such a large amount of personal cash on hand. McCaskill will be the same way.

A health and beauty care company isn't auspicious in and of itself. However, Brunner's dealings with any government agencies in Missouri will be scrutinized after he runs for office. If a businessman gets elected, he will have to tread very carefully to avoid potential conflicts of interest within his own sector of the economy.

A non-political candidate will also offer another aspect of the 2010 election all over again. Many tea party candidates ran for office as private citizens as opposed to being career politicians. Brunner's run would be seen as an anti-establishment candidate as he would be against savvy political types in both the primary and general elections.

Republicans in Missouri will have an interesting third choice in the primary. Brunner will be a worthy opponent against Steelman and Akin. How they respond to a fresh face will be key to their electability to the Senate.

Fine crafts are the feature of Studio B?s monthly exhibit opening Friday, September 16, 2011, 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Studio B. ?Crafted,? features the fine art of craft. Despite doubt among political analysts and his opponents, Chavez said he should be able to run a vigorous campaign ahead of the 2012 presidential election vote, and reaffirmed his ambition to rule for at least two more six-year terms.

Opinion polls show a small sympathy boost for Chavez since he announced his cancer treatment, with various recent surveys putting his approval ratings at more than 50 percent. That is lower than some other moments of his rule, but still a formidable level for a man in his 13th year in power.

The opposition has scheduled primaries in February to pick a unity candidate, with a youthful state governor, Henrique Capriles Radonski, the favorite to win that.

One big, unknown factor in Venezuela's political scenario is the date of the election.
