Rescuer saves Calif. hiker from mountainside ledge

As Lawrence Bishop lay battered, bruised and weakened from two days without food or water, clinging to a narrow ledge of slick granite high in the Sierra Nevada, Deputy David Rippe made a split-second decision that likely saved him.

Without ropes, Rippe scrambled 300 feet up a 70-degree slope of granite polished smooth by eons of snow and ice to secure Bishop with nylon webbing he happened to have in his pocket.

"I knew I had to get there quickly and safely," Rippe, a member of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team, said Wednesday. "He looked like he was going to fall at any moment, and I was just hoping I could get there before he did."

Saturday's dramatic rescue was completed when a high-altitude Highway Patrol helicopter hoisted Bishop off the 10,295-foot peak, capping a 24-hour search for the 64-year-old man who had become separated from his group nearly two days earlier.

Bishop, a retired hazardous waste specialist from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, told rescuers he had tried to descend the dome of granite in Dinky Lakes Wilderness 45 miles northeast of Fresno after he summited Dog Tooth Peak on Thursday then chose what turned out to be a hazardous route down.

Hallucinating about being rescued
He fell three times, cutting his head and scraping up his body, and stayed up all night trying to keep his balance before he realized midday Friday he couldn't make it. He found a six-to-seven-inch wide ledge about 150 yards from the bottom and wedged his body there while he hallucinated about being rescued.

"I was planted there until someone found me or I was going to die there," Bishop said Wednesday.

He had started slipping down the rock on Saturday as his delirium increased and his strength faltered on Saturday when he spotted what looked like a group of people standing below him.

"I was kind of on my last foothold holding on," Bishop recalled. "I saw some orange suits and got this burst of adrenalin. I instantly sturdied my foot, I sturdied my hand and I yelled, 'Help me!' as loud as I could."

The folks in orange were members of the sheriff's volunteer search and rescue team who were walking a grid looking for any sign of Bishop, whose backpack had been located earlier in the day at the top of the peak.

Bishop let out a moan. Rippe thought he heard him.

"I turned to another deputy and said, 'did you hear that?'" Rippe said.

Deputy Greg Villanueva said he thought he had heard something too, just as a helicopter passed overhead.

'He saved my life'
The deputies waved off the chopper and listened again. Villanueva quickly spotted Bishop, his dark shirt and pants blending into the side of the mountain.

"He looked like he was just about ready to fall," said Rippe, who yelled: "'Don't move, we're coming to get you.'"

The rest of the astonished team watched as Rippe scrambled up the side of the granite slope.

Russ Richardson, head of the volunteer search crew, said Rippe's climb without rope or other equipment was "stressful and amazing."

When he reached Bishop, Rippe put his hand on his shoulder then looped the 20-foot section of webbing between the man's legs and over a narrow ledge.

Standard procedure is to have a helicopter lower a "screamer suit," sort of a full-body sling in which injured people can be loaded and then hoisted to safety. But with no room to work, Rippe told Bishop his only option was a less secure cinch collar, which fits under a person's arms like a life preserver. With legs dangling, Bishop was hoisted by the helicopter to safety.

"When they touched me, I kind of collapsed," Bishop said. "He saved my life."

Rippe's main duty is investigating Internet sex crimes against children. He said the danger he defied while scaling the granite promontory that was far steeper than Yosemite's Half Dome didn't frighten him until he thought about it later.

"At the time I was fine, but afterward is another story," he said. "When I was up there I looked down and saw where I had gone and it looked a lot different to me than it did in the beginning. It really made me stop and think."

If you live until 2045, you may never have to fear death

If you have enough cash, a Russian man may be able to help you live forever

Immortality is something all of us have thought of, but nobody really takes seriously. A 31-year-old Russian man named Dmitry Itskov wants you to seriously consider the possibility of living forever, and perhaps even plan on being able to do so by 2045. His plan, called simply "The 2045 Initiative," will sound familiar if you've seen the James Camera blockbuster "Avatar" ? and he just needs a few billion dollars to make it a reality.

Itskov's project has several phases, with each step bringing mankind closer to the ultimate goal living forever. The first step in the project is to create robotic humans that can be controlled remotely. He plans on crossing this hurdle by 2020 at the latest. Then, by 2025, a human brain will be transferred into a robotic skeleton to continue life after death. By 2035, the avatar's brain will be constructed separately, and your own personality will simply be "transferred" into it when you are ready to end your human existence. And finally, by the year 2045, humans will be able to walk around in holographic avatars for eternity, never fearing death.

Not surprisingly, the Avatar project is extremely expensive, and Itskov needs some serious financial help if he's to pull it off. So, naturally, he's asking the world's richest people to help fund the movement. In return, he's pledging to help each donor on his or her own immortality quest. You know, because you just can't spend $50 billion in one lifetime.

Frugal Family Tree: The need to be Organized

It seems every year around the beginning of August I am thinking about home organization. Not sure if its the long days of summer that give me plenty of sunlight to see my home in its frazzled state or if its always right after my birthday and I am full of ideas for change.

I have declared the first week of August in my house organize week! I will be sorting my stuff to keep, sell or donate. I want to get some labels and those clear shoe boxes to have the stuff I do need organized. My son and I were painting and I did not realize how much great stuff he has for art time that we dont use simply because I did not know it was there.?

I will start with my office, then the closet and finish in the kitchen. I have dreamy thoughts of perfect organization fueled by Pinterest but if I can just know where stuff is that will be great!

One blogger I am reading more of is Organize with Sandy. Click on her Organize Your Home tab for great tips. I found a great Organize Pinterest Board on her account with over 1200 pins to the board. I will be going through it as I clean and organize this week looking for ideas.

I will be busy as a bee cleaning this week.?

If you have any organizing tips, especially for kids toys I would love to hear them.

Kinect Toolbox update turns hand gestures into mouse input, physical contact into distant memory

Kinect Toolbox update turns our frantic gestures into mouse input

Using Microsoft's Kinect to replace a mouse is often considered the Holy Grail of developers; there have been hacks and other tricks to get it working well before Kinect for Windows was even an option. A lead Technical Evangelist for Microsoft in France, David Catuhe, has just provided a less makeshift approach. The 1.2 update to his Kinect Toolbox side project introduces hooks to control the mouse outright, including 'magnetic' control to draw the mouse from its original position. To help keep the newly fashioned input (among other gestures) under control, Catuhe has also taken advantage of the SDK 1.5 release to check that the would-be hand-waver is sitting and staring at the Kinect before accepting any input. The open-source Windows software is available to grab for experimentation today, so if you think hands-free belongs as much on the PC desktop as in a car, you now have a ready-made way to make the dream a reality... at least, until you have to type.

Student + mentor = innovative cancer research | News Center ...

Published: ? July 31, 2012

When Wake Forest junior Katherine Sams received an invitation to share her research on fatigue in breast cancer patients at the largest gathering of cancer professionals in the world, it was addressed to Dr. Sams.

Sams hasn?t earned a medical degree, but the mistake reflects the high-caliber work she has done with Dr. Edward Shaw, professor of counseling at Wake Forest and professor of radiation oncology at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Presenting to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and rubbing elbows with representatives from many of the most prominent medical institutions and health care companies is an unusual opportunity for an undergraduate student.

Sams, a psychology major, was selected from among thousands of applicants to present a poster of her research on June 2.

?Attending ASCO was such a surreal experience, and I was so excited and nervous,? Sams said. ?But overall it has been such a great learning process, because I now know what sort of credentials I?ll need as a graduate and I won?t be as intimidated when interacting with other professionals within the field.?

Shaw and Sams met during his first-year seminar called ?Contemporary Issues in Medicine and Mental Health.? Throughout the course, Sams? professional goals and interests caught his attention.

?Not very many college freshmen say that they want to go into neuropsychology, but Katherine had a very specific interest,? Shaw said. ?She was a great student, very engaged and an active participant in class. She also had an interest in bio-statistics, so when the opportunity arose, she was very eager to join a project where she could put those interests to use.?

Shaw conducts cancer research in the area of symptom management. In a previous study completed by his grant team with the Wake Forest School of Medicine, researchers explored treatment for the most common symptoms of cancer treatment in patients with breast cancer, fatigue.

Sams, with the mentorship of Shaw and several of his medical center colleagues, used sophisticated biostatistical techniques? to compare three different methods researchers used to measure fatigue.? She learned about clinical trials and Coenzyme Q10, which women in the study received to combat their chemotherapy induced fatigue.

In the next phase of her research, Sams will be completing a manuscript and submitting her work to an academic journal. If accepted, she will be named first officer of the project, which is a great achievement for an undergraduate student.

?Wake Forest cultures an environment where students really get the most out of working with their professors and forming strong academic relationships,? Sams said.? ?These relationships can help students feel more secure about their classes and provide a great stepping stone for future opportunities.?
