Tonik, Dog With 'Human' Face, Available For Adoption (PHOTOS)

It's just one of those things that are like, "Whoa, dude."

Gawker pointed out that Tonik, a poodle-Shih Tzu mix available for adoption from an Indiana animal welfare agency, actually has an "eerily humanoid" face.

Petfinder notes that the dog came to the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group from a kill shelter in Kentucky. The personable photos were taken by Renny Mills, a professional pet photographer.

In an email to The Huffington Post, Jen Schwartz, the owner of Homeward Bound, said the shelter had recently taken in dogs that required dental work and had illnesses that required expensive treatments.

It's totally horrible that any animals -- whether they have human faces or not -- have to die because nobody wants them. Here's hoping that Tonik finds an awesome home.

News in Brief: TV watching linked to low sperm counts

Couch potatoes? reproductive health may suffer

By Nathan Seppa

Web edition: February 4, 2013

Men who watch a lot of television have lower sperm counts than those who don?t watch any, researchers report February 4 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Sperm count is an informal term that refers to the concentration of sperm in a given volume of semen.

Researchers gave questionnaires to 189 healthy young men and analyzed their sperm. Respondents who watched more than 20 hours of TV per week had 44 percent lower sperm counts than those who didn?t watch any. The team, led by Audrey J. Gaskins and Jorge Chavarro of the Harvard School of Public Health, also found that men who spent the most time doing moderate to vigorous physical exercise had 73 percent higher sperm counts than did the men who were least active.

While the findings don?t spell out an explanation for these differences, the authors cite the broad physiological benefits of exercise. They also note that cooler scrotal temperatures have been linked to a higher sperm count, and that sedentary positions and certain exercises such as bicycling have been linked to higher scrotal temperatures.

IRL: Skooba Cable Stable, Kanex mySpot and the HTC One X+

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

We've got some practical considerations on our minds this week. Sensible things, like managing a mess of cables or getting online from hotel rooms. We've found some products that serve us well on both fronts, but there's still at least one conundrum we can't quite resolve: is it better to get a cheapie One X or a slightly faster One X+? We'll hash that one out after the break -- and you can do the same in the comments.

(AP) ? The rapper Macklemore thinks there's a simple reason the hit "Thrift Shop" appears to be going viral: It dares to be different.

"There's a certain sound that has kind of flooded the mainstream airwaves as far as hip-hop music," he said a few hours after taping a performance on "Late Show with David Letterman" on Thursday night with producing partner Ryan Lewis. "The beat doesn't sound anything like that, the lyrics are kind of completely polar opposite from what you hear from most commercial rap records and it's got a hook that's very catchy. So I think that you combine those three things and it equates to an original sounding song that's refreshing to the audience that hears it."

Listeners have responded with rare enthusiasm to the song about "poppin' tags" to develop your own unique sense of swag. "Thrift Shop" sits atop the Billboard Hot 100 radio airplay chart, the Nielsen SoundScan Digital Songs chart and is the No. 1 song on Spotify for two consecutive weeks. Only one other song, Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven," has reached the top of those lists simultaneously.

The Seattle-based duo has sold 2.3 million copies so far ? a million in the last month alone ? and sales continue to grow week to week. Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, said he and Lewis thought the song might appeal to a "niche demographic" and didn't envision it becoming a single. The song's sense of humor is key, but Haggerty says there's also a deeper message about individuality and modern culture's obsession with expensive fashion.

"The more expensive the better is kind of the American way and if you spent $600 for a sweatshirt, then that makes it better," Haggerty said. "And I don't necessarily think that's the case. If it's a $600 sweatshirt that's fresh, that's fantastic if it looks great. But to me to just pay a ridiculous amount of money for something just because of the logo isn't creative and it's just unfortunate that people equate spending money to style."

Man at center of Te'o hoax says he was molested

The program, which aired Thursday, Jan. 31, and Friday, Feb. 1, was the first on-air interview of Ronaiah, the man who allegedly concocted the girlfriend hoax that ensnared Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o. (AP Photo/CBS Television Distribution/Peteski Productions)

The man who says he tricked Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o into falling for a fake woman he created online claims the hoax had "everything to do" with escaping from real life because he had been molested as a child.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo spoke publicly for the first time in an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw for the "Dr. Phil Show," the second part of which aired Friday.

The 22-year-old Tuiasosopo told McGraw he was repeatedly molested, beginning at age 12, by someone who was close to his father, a church pastor and youth minister.

"I felt that I couldn't do things, accomplish things, pursue things, live out as Ronaiah," Tuiasosopo said. "And I felt the need to create this. It has everything to do with what I went through as a child."

Tuiasosopo did not identify his alleged attacker by name and did not say whether he had told police about his claim.

His father, Titus Tuiasosopo, said it was difficult to hear the details of the abuse his son suffered.

"When he told me the location, the time, I could go back and vividly remember those trips, the times that these guys came over," he said. "That part, right there, was kind of gut wrenching for me."

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo said he built the online persona of Lennay Kekua, a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell in love with despite never meeting in person. Tuiasosopo then killed off the character last September.

He said creating Kekua ? who met Te'o online during the player's freshman year at Notre Dame ? allowed him to live in an alternate reality, and helped validate that he was a good person.

"When I looked at Lennay through Manti's eyes, I got a glimpse of who I was as far as my heart," said Tuisasosopo, who told McGraw that he fell in love with Te'o.

When Deadspin.com exposed the hoax in a story on Jan. 16, the report raised questions about whether Te'o was in on it. But Te'o denied he was involved and Tuiasosopo also said the All-American had nothing to do with the scam.

Kekua "died" the same day in September that Te'o's real grandmother passed away, and the story of the linebacker playing through the double tragedy became an often-told tale as Notre Dame went 12-0 last season and earned a spot in the BCS championship. Te'o failed at the time to make clear that he had only known Kekua online and through phone calls, which caused confusion later.

Te'o won seven national awards for his play and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. A couple of days before that award was presented, the linebacker had a call from the Kekua character saying she was alive.

Te'o, who has said he was deeply confused by that conversation, ultimately told his parents and coaches about the situation. Notre Dame said an investigation of Te'o's claims backed up his story and pointed to Tuiasosopo as the person behind the hoax. When asked by Katie Couric in an interview broadcast last week, Te'o said he is not gay.

Te'o and his family had no immediate comment on Friday.

In the McGraw interview, Tuiasosopo said he was the voice of Kekua, and provided samples to McGraw and a producer. One of those samples, McGraw said, was compared by three separate laboratories to recorded voice mails sent by Kekua to Te'o. They were a match, he said.

Tuiasosopo apologized to Te'o, Notre Dame, his own family and everyone else affected by the hoax during the interview.

"People say, 'Well, does he even have any feeling toward this?'" Tuiasosopo said. "The truth is, I hurt every day from the decisions that I made."

TWTD.co.uk | Connor Wants Home Improvement - Ipswich Town News

Connor Wants Home Improvement
Saturday, 2nd Feb 2013 06:01

Assistant manager Terry Connor wants to see Town?s home form improve, the Blues having failed to win any of their last three games at Portman Road. A 1-1 draw with Bristol City just before Christmas was followed by a New Year's Day 3-0 loss to Brighton and another 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

Connor says good home form should be central to Town?s push away from the danger zone: ?You would like it to be. Everybody wants their team to win games at home and to make it into a fortress, and that?s what we?re trying to do.

?But the most important thing is that we gather points along the way. Everyone wants their team to play well at home and to win two or three so everybody?s hunky dory with it.

?But we recognise that teams come and put their barriers up and we have to try to break them down and sometimes it?s difficult to do that.?

Overall, he?s pleased with progress since he and McCarthy took over at Town three months ago: ?I think Mick and I came to work here on November 1st and we were four points adrift [at the bottom]. I think you?ll find that we?re now four points better off than [the team in 22nd].

?All we?ve tried to do is keep our heads down, keep working hard, get the boys to work hard and try to win enough games so that by May 4th we maintain our Championship status.

?In January, we?ve had a chance to maybe add one or two, which we tried to do and we have done and now we just push on with 17 games left and make sure we?re talking about Ipswich as a Championship team going forward in May.?

He added: ?I think you could say we?ve done well, we?ve turned things around a little bit. We were four points adrift and now we?re four points better off. If we can maintain that status quo to the end of the season, we?d have done a decent job, I think.?

Manager McCarthy made his annoyance at last week's 2-1 defeat at Bristol City all too clear and his assistant says he and the squad have worked on ensuring there's no repeat: ?The only way to get the gaffer to be as angry as that is to be 1-0 up, lose a goal just after half-time, then lose a goal in the last minute.

?We?ll try tomorrow to make sure that doesn?t happen and put a smile on his face. That having had the week that he?s had, he can finish it off with a bit of a smile and a positive outlook.

?Our general performance [at Bristol City] was very, very good, but we made two errors, and were highly punished for them.?

Connor says he?s enjoying life in Suffolk, despite having been established in the Midlands during a long spell with Wolves: ?It?s a bit of a change. I spent 13 years at Wolves and I spent 10 years in and around the Bristol area before that, so I?ve been really settled in certain areas.

?This is a time where I?ve had to leave my family and go and work away. But over the years coming down here and playing Ipswich and Norwich, coming to this part of the world I?ve always been well-received, people have always been very courteous.

?Although the rivalry?s there and they want to beat your team, there?s always been a good balance about their banter and how they speak to you.

?The staff in hotels, they speak to you well, everything in this part of the world?s always been great and I?ve found that no different in the two or three months that I?ve been down here working.?
