Big 12 football notebook: Texas coach Brown saw West Virginia loss coming

Shortly after West Virginia defeated Texas, Longhorns coach Mack Brown predicted a Mountaineers loss in the second game of their two-game Texas swing.

Texas Tech routed WVU, 49-14.

?I said last week I thought it?d be really hard for West Virginia to go to Lubbock. I?ve been there. It?s a very difficult place to play,? Brown said Monday. ?Everybody better get ready because you?re seeing kids with tremendous emotion one week and not as much emotion the next week.?

Neither Texas nor Oklahoma has a home-field advantage in the Red River Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, but Texas has lost the past two meetings by a combined score of 118-38, including Saturday?s 63-21 defeat.

?That?s such a great game and a traditional game in Dallas. We haven?t held up our end the last couple years,? Brown said. ?We got outcoached and outplayed in every form and fashion. It?s unacceptable.?

Kansas State answers
Iowa State well

Despite leading twice in the second quarter, Iowa State trailed, 17-14, at halftime before losing to Kansas State, 27-21.

?They scored 17 points after our three touchdowns ? two touchdown drives of their own,? Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said. ?The one at the end of the half was pivotal, really affected the momentum going into the locker room.?

Jeff Woody?s touchdown run cut Kansas State?s lead to 24-21 early in the fourth quarter. Kansas State took the ensuing kickoff and controlled the ball on the ground to set up Anthony Cantele?s 25-yard field goal for the final margin score with 4:24 remaining.

Oklahoma?s defense doesn?t
do anything fancy

Oklahoma ranks No. 14 nationally in passing defense by keeping things simple.

The Sooners don?t call exotic blitzes and try keep everything in front of them. They limited Texas? high-powered attack to 289 yards and held quarterback David Ash to 13 of 29 passing for 113 yards and two interceptions.

?It?s been our belief you don?t play great defense by trying to fool people,? Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. ?Sometimes, you put yourself into trouble where people can look for it and take advantage of it.?

Stoops credits the addition of younger brother Mike as the Sooners? new defensive coordinator following 11 years as Arizona?s coach.

?We pick our times when we do change up or blitz, but we?re counting on our technique and our fundamentals and playing good, solid defense to win for us,? Bob Stoops said. ?Mike?s had a lot to do with it, along with our other defensive coaches.?
